Register break under Windows 8

Hi,

Since two/three months I encountered problems under Windows 8. Those problems are:

  • Unable to install updates for Windows
  • No access to UAC
  • No power management
  • Unable to share over the network my 2nd HardDrive
  • Unable to modify "Program Files"
  • Can't see history of Windows defender

Windows give me the error 80080015. After some search it turns out that nothing are helpful. Under Windows Defender I have the following error: "The activation requires a display name to be present under the CLSID key". After some search i founded into this forum other people like me who encountered the same problem. But there is no solution. It appears that it is a problem with Ccleaner so i come here to have some help.

I hope you can help me and thank you in advance.

Cristallix

PS: Sorry for my english

personally, i would be backing up my files and starting from scratch.

your issues seem to be many and varied.

you could spend hours trying to find solutions or just bite the bullet and reinstall Windows 8, probably for less effort and stress.

i assume you have the installation DVD and Product Key?

the problems you have listed are probably only the tip of the iceberg. the more you dig, the more you may find.

but, if you do want to try and get the PC working again....

do you have an image of the system backed up?

have you tried using Restore Points and going back to a previous point in time?

can you start the PC in Safe Mode and run some diagnostics?

i assume you ran CCleaner?, did you also run the Registry cleaner and if so, did you tell it to backup the registry?

Yes, Less stress but a lot of time wasted for reinstalling all the software I use...

I don't have a DVD for installation, and I don't have a DVD drive anymore but a bootable USB key should be enough (License is from MSDNAA)

The fact is that those problems are linked because the same error message about CLSID appears under Defender and while I tried to share my HDD over the network.

The last backup is dated of April 17th, so it is too late. Safe mode works fine, and editing files under "Program files" is working.

Since the time I uses Ccleaner I stop using the save option for the registry because I never encountered problem with it.

Today I tried to activate the default administrator account to see if it can solves some problems. It appears that under this account I can run Updates for Windows. It appears that my problem are related to my user account.

It appears that my problem are related to my user account.

Well, that is a positive start. (your 'editing files under Program Files' statement scares me though)

Your problem may be limited to your user profile.

Either in Safe Mode or using the Admin account, get the Charm Bar up, go to Settings, Change PC Settings, Users, Add a User.

Reboot and log on to the new user.

In Windows Explorer, you should then be able to copy your personal files from the old user to the newly created one.

Installed software should still be good. You'll just have to re-setup your personalisations; wallpaper, email account etc.

The problem is not that simple. Under the Administrator account I cannot access to UAC configuration and i still can't change the power management of the computer. The problem is deeper than creating and using an other account.

Because I don't have many time to search about this problem, and there is no simple solution, I simply reinstall Windows today.

Thank you for trying to help me.

Cool, as I originally thought, faster, less stressful and you at least know you have a clean system.

Of course reloading all the software can be a pain, but usually an hour is all it takes.

And without teaching you how to suck eggs, maybe do your backups more often.

No one has ever gotten into trouble by backing up too often :D

Backup may be cool, but I'm never sure of the result

no, no , no - that's the wrong attitude :)

backups should be your friend, your very, very good friend.

the day will come when you will absolutely LOVE your backup.

you need to trust them explicitly.

if you are unsure of the result, you need to do more of them, even just dummy little test runs, where you just backup a folder or two.

then go back into the backup destination and check the data is there.

then, even do a dummy restore test and recovery the files from the backup to somewhere on the PC just to check things come back as they should.

once you know how to use your backup software, and have faith in it, you will be much more confident that it is doing what you expect.

and, hopefully, in trusting the software, you will use it more.

Hi csharma.dav, and welcome to Piriform.

That's a good find, and if you've registered simply to post that information then that's very good of you and I'm sure will be appreciated by anyone else hitting that issue.

Even if it isn't the magic bullet for Cristallix (may have reinstalled by now), it may be for others.

:)
