Download and make iso

Here is what you are allowed to do with it....

You will be able to upgrade from any consumer edition of Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro and bring everything along which includes your Windows settings, personal files, and apps. If you are upgrading from Windows Vista, you will be able to bring along your Windows settings and personal files, and if you are upgrading from Windows XP you will only be able to bring along your personal files. Of course, if you want to start fresh, you can choose to bring nothing along. Or if you prefer to format your hard drive as part of your upgrade experience, you can do so as long as you boot from media and then format your hard drive from within the setup experience for installing Windows 8, not prior to it.

http://blogs.windows...-for-39-99.aspx

if you’re not upgrading from a prior version of Windows and are building your own PC or installing Windows 8 in a virtual machine or a separate partition, you will be able to purchase and install the Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro System Builder product
.

So if you have a spare not much used machine running any version of windows may be fun to give it a go at that price.

Hazelnut, (or anybody), how do you create an iso? Also, what is an iso? Is it a self-made installation DVD? Sounds scary yet so fantastic. As you obviously have guessed by now I am not a PC programming nerd. I can learn, but in increments. If creating an iso is completely devastating please let me down softly. I'm a romantic. But if it's reasonably do-able, I'll give it a try. Thanks in advance, your friend, Bart Simpson.

ISO definition here.

You can create and burn an ISO disk image using freeware CD/DVD/BR burning tools like ImgBurn, etc., with ImgBurn possibility being one of the best for one reason in that it's able to verify the written data after burning the disc.

This thread is not for people who want to try a 'pretend skin type' Win 8. SuperFast.

It is info on buying and using Windows 8.

What you have posted about is a totally different thing.

Let's keep on topic please :)

If you have ever used your pc to burn photos to disc then it's about as easy as that.. so no worries Bart :)

First get your iso download. Download it to somewhere you will find it easily afterwards (e.g downloads folder, desktop)

This link explains things nicely, use either of the mentioned tools. (Note CDBurnerXP works on Win7 and even Win8, I know 'cause I have used it)

For the Win 8 .iso file use a dvd.

If you want to have a little practice first Corona burn this little Linux Puppy.iso file as a test. It fits on a cd.

http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm

I chose the iso file next to..... 'Download Slacko 5.3.3 from nluug.nl:'

Put it in your machine and reboot your machine and it should load Puppy's linux operating system if you have your pc setup to boot from a cd first. (you will soon tell if it isn't, as Windows will load instead) Remember you are not installing it like you would be Windows 8, Puppy is what is called a livecd and will vanish when you close it down and remove the disc.

I know. But by sampling it before actually downloading it, they can determine if they wish to buy it, or just keep 7. And don't have to wipe their machine.

I can't boot Win8 .iso file from DVD without installing it on top of my Win7? I can't just take a temporary test drive like I could with Linux Puppy? :(

The nearest you could get to trying Win 8 I guess is to install it on a hardware compatible vista or xp machine that you no longer use much.

Somewhere I have seen that Windows 7 can run a virtual machine without needing any third party utility,

in which you can run and try Windows 8.

I know my son installed the third party Oracle VirtualBox on my Windows 7 system and ran Windows 8 in that.

I quickly decided that Windows 8 was not for me.

Oracle VirtualBox will also run under Windows XP so you can taste Virtual Windows 8 on a real Windows XP\Vista platform, and immediately after restore sanity :)

This is a usefull internet search phrase

"Windows 7" "virtual windows 8"

It gave me 586 results, including

Hazel, could you not use some virtual PC software to load Win8 onto and test drive?

(sorry if that was off topic - please don't hurt me :) )

Backup now & backup often.
It's your digital life - protect it with a backup.
Three things are certain; Birth, Death and loss of data. You control the last.
