Wipe free space

I regularly use Ccleaner and find it very good.

I would like to try and wipe only the free space on my drive just to ensure no 'residues' are lying about.

How confident can I be that nothing else will be erased during this process.

I have used something similar in the past which was part of McAfee software and it worked OK.

You can be confident nothing else will be erased ; however, unless you have deleted very important files and do not want someone to be able to recover them, there's no point in wiping the free space. :)

How thoroughly does CCleaner wipe your free space? I can't imagine it would be a thorough as something like DBAN(which I know whips your whole hard drive). I'm just curious how hard it would be for someone to recover information, if at all possible, after running the "wipe free space" feature in the program?

The program overwrites everything with 00000000000000000000.

I use a different program that overwrites with ????????????????.

Both overwrites achieve obliteration.

Not to worry. Recovery is impossible.
