CPU Usage at 100%

Hi all, was wondering if anyone here has any ideas what the problem could be with this computer. Start-up takes a long time, and the audio skips a lot as windows is loading. After a few minutes, the system seems to be running fine, as in navigating windows is quick and the CPU usage in the task manager is low (0 - 5%). Then when you go to run a video, audio, or internet program it all craps out and the usage goes to 100% and basically just stays there, all the while the System Idle Process is still very high (90-95%). I have installed and ran two virus/malware programs (trendmicro and AVG) and they both say the system is clean (it was reformatted about 2 months ago as well and was working fine until a week ago).

Some suggestions:

• Try using another antivirus, maybe it's AVG's fault.
• If you have another computer to sync your iPod, uninstall all Apple-related things (don't forget Bonjour). They are known to cause BSODs, slowdowns, etc.
• Update your drivers. If you don't mind installing a plugin, My-config.com has a useful tool for that: http://www.ma-config.com/en/

System Idle Process is meant to be high. It's the system twiddling it's fingers doing nothing.

 

Here is mine,

 

 

as Aethec has said, i would change AVG, i have known it to cain CPU and make computers very unresponsive. Just look how many processes it uses.

 

Try something like avast and disable shields you do not requier

 

edit: I use to experience simular problems with one of avast shields "web shield" i think.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I think I need to clarify some things. Firstly, I grabbed AVG after the problem started and have only run the program once to see if there was anything on the system. Secondly, and for the sake of this problem all the more relevant; the System Idle Process is high (as its suppose to be) but the CPU usage is still maxing out at the 100%. I'm not on the busted laptop now or else I would have posted a screen shot, but the Idle is in the high 90's, other stuff is bouncing around the 5-10 range depending on what i'm trying to do, but the computer overall usage is still 100. Here is what mine looks like on here. The other one has the same Idle at the top, but the CPU at the bottom is 100 instead of 0 or 1 or 2 etc.

 

Anyway, will go to the recommended page and read what they have to say, thanks and will report back if anything changes.

After making sure you have a backup of all the things you need, uninstall your Antivirus so it does not interfere, then try to system restore back to before you had the problem. System Restore is included in Windows ME/XP/Vista & 7.

 

Additionally, try to remember what you may have installed/used that could have caused the problem. CPU 100% use is not normal. Try cleaning your computer of dust from the processor fans, video card fans, case fans, power supply fans. Dust buildups can cause inadequate cooling & make your computer run slooooowww or even power off to protect it from ruin.

 

Watch out for startup processes & auto updaters like google in the system tasks folder, or the BHO/Startup items. Apple is known for mass slowdowns & BSOD with it's ipodware. Check out your other programs you may have installed or used since then, & even try checking your updates. Sometimes a system update causes a BSOD or high CPU use.

 

Temporarily disable updates if you have to after you restore back, till you figure out what is causing the problem.

Give yourself a bit more info on whats going on Newhotness by in Taskmanager select 'view' at the top, then select columns and choose a few more things to show. I have things like memory usage, peak memory usage and page fault columns.

 

Also what do you have running at startup?

Just to add to mr dons post on cleaning. If you're going to clean the machine, get stuck into it with a paintbrush and hoover, leave the power cord plugged in and nothing else. Make sure the mains is switched off at the wall or at the very least on the PSU at the back. This will make sure the PC is still earthed and will stop any static problems from your brush.

 

If you can, get a high pressure air line in. Cans are not expensive.

 

Do you have a lot of unnesserssery programs installed? Lots of toolbars? As said whats in your startup?
