Ishi
I don't know if this was suggested before but I think the option to install CCleaner's Yahoo toolbar should be disabled by default on the installation setup. For inexperienced users who would just install without unchecking unneeded components, they would be installing another toolbar that they may not really need or want and CCleaner's Yahoo toolbar is just one of those. These toolbars will just clutter the space in the browser and potentially make it slower so I suggest this should be UNCHECKED by default so it only gets installed if needed and desired. In my own mind, I also want the Run CCleaner and Open CCleaner Recycle bin context menus disabled by default because those are not hugely significant and noticed especially with the CCleaner taskbar jump lists that I enjoy so much. I love computer maintenance tasks. Some of my favorite programs: Wordpad -basic word processing Notepad - temporary clipboard and basic scripting module Windows Media Player 12- video, music and online radio player Windows Media Center - live TV, local FM radio CCleaner- handy computer maintenance tool If something fails to work after using the registry cleaner, use SYSTEM RESTORE. Moderators Nergal Posted August 27, 2010 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2010 Sorry Ishi, I'm going to have to disagree. While I myself don't use the bar and caution everyone to watch their installers and make sure not to install the bars. The Yahoo bar is the revenue source for piriform and that is based on install numbers so setting it to off by default would be self defeating. ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark) ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T. Aethec
As Nergal said. The whole point of the Yahoo toolbar is to get money. Nobody actually wants to install it. Piriform French translator
Saintj
Don't agree with you either, the first to options are just usefull and the last well they gotta make a penny aswell right it's a free program, come on they do great work. Just don't randomly click next if you want to uncheck things, if you installed it once you know what you want and on't want.
Moderators DennisD Posted August 27, 2010 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2010 You'll come across a lot of good freeware applications by legitimate software houses or writers, which come with options you may not need or want, so it really pays to carefully watch an install for these extras. One of the costs of freeware, and you are given the choice. You should also take a look at the agreements most people just nonchalantly click OK to, as Freeware can be bundled with Adware, or known Spyware. A good example is "Opencandy". This was recognized as Spyware, and was bundled with damn good freeware a while back. I'll have to say Opencandy may not be viewed in the same way now, but it created a lot of discussion a short while ago. Javacool Software actually produce a tool to analyze these agreements for suspicious names and phrases. EULAlyzer: Food for thought.
ishan_rulz
Or just make sure you download the Slim build. Its up the user to read / research a bit, no? Simplicity is hard.
Ishi
I don't really know what the toolbar does for profits. I have seen several apps prompting me to install the Ask toolbar though. It makes revenue for Piriform??? Yes, I was thinking, I should get the slim build next time. I love computer maintenance tasks. Aethec
Yes, it does. The Paint.NET dev, Rick Brewster, once said a not-so-well-known company would offer him 80 cents per download if he bundled their "bonus software" (a.k.a. spyware) with it. CCleaner recently hit the 500,000,000 downloads milestone. Even if Piriform gets, say, five cents per download, and 20% of those downloads are the Slim build, they'd earn...20 million dollars. ident
I'm sure that piriforms contract with yahoo would be checked by default. The installation is designed for the first time user to gain maximum first time user experience. It takes less then 10seconds to sort it. No fate but what we make
Moderators Andavari Posted August 28, 2010 Moderators Share Posted August 28, 2010 A good example is "Opencandy". This was recognized as Spyware, and was bundled with damn good freeware a while back. I'll have to say Opencandy may not be viewed in the same way now, but it created a lot of discussion a short while ago. Opencandy is why last year about this time I stopped updating several programs I use which now have it. The problem with it (at least last year) was it would still install on drive C: even if it was opted out of which is very suspicious. Even after reading all about it I don't trust it. --- As for Ishi's wishes I think this also falls into the line of CCleaner, etc., remembering our chosen install options in say an "install.ini" file which I really wish could be implemented. Of course there's the builds without the toolbar!
