Check out http://www.reviewsaurus.com/tips-tricks/windows-xp-sp3-service-pack-3-install-problems/ I am not recommending that you downgrade to SP2 to see if you fare better, but if you do make any serious changes, be sure you always back up your entire system before proceeding so that you have a way to recover in the event of a disaster.
