Porn in the registry

I'm not quite sure how all this stuff got in my computer, but there are numerous porn sites in my registry. I'm guessing it came from pop ups when I've surfed the web? I've deleted the obvious ones, but how does one set CCleaner to scan and get rid of all of them? It's really nasty I want this stuff gone! :(

Hi Feather, and welcome to Piriform.

Not sure how you could clear all that stuff from your registry, but I'm wondering if you use a "Hosts File".

I was searching for something some time ago, and I came across some very weird names which I new hadn't been put there by me. They turned out to be entries in the "Hosts File".

I cross checked the names in the registry with my Hosts File, and they matched. I would normally show you a screenshot now, but I can't do that on this occassion.

I found some of the entries here, and there were some pretty nasty names amongst them.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\

I've often wondered how to avoid family members seeing these by chance, but going into the registry is thankfully beyond them.

Hope that helps, but apart from hunting them down with a search, I can't think of how you could quickly get rid of them.

Hopefully another member may have a better method you could use.

I would very much agree with the above. But Maybe if you really dont want such material popping up maybe its time to look at your browsing habbits?

Porn popups dont just appear from any old site. Have you tryed using Firefox? will be better protection agasint popups then Internet explroer.

But i dont want to drift away from the topic.

No fate but what we make

My habits are not the issue. I have a family member here who I believe is the culprit.

Sorry, i didnt mean to sound i was being judgemental. Nothing wrong with adults browsing porn, but lets not stray into that one lol

When you say family member i assume you mean son/daughter. personally i think software that blocks sites is no cure to the actual problem. I think sitting down and explaining is better. Also explaining the risks of damaging there own pc.

No fate but what we make

Where in the registry are they exactly, because it may be that they are listed sites in the security section of the registry. For instance if they're listed as this

Key Name: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\{SITENAME}\wwwClass Name: <NO CLASS>Last Write Time: 7/9/2009 - 11:52 AMValue 0 Name: * Type: REG_DWORD Data: 0x4

the Data 0x4 means that it is a restricted site (if data reads 0x2 it's a trusted site)

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

Adware/Spyware blockers that put in blocked sites like SpywareBlaster, Spybot-S&D, and IObit Advanced SystemCare will all input bad sites to block in Internet Explorer so if you've used any programs like that it's of no surprise you'll see porn related sites in the registry as they're blocked sites in Internet Explorer.

If they're located here, they're likely to have been inputted by an Anti-Spyware program:

  • Cookies:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\P3P
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\P3P

  • IP Addresses:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges

  • Website URL's/Domains:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

You can always verify that they are indeed blocked sites by right clicking the Internet Explorer desktop icon, then click Properties (or go into Control Panel->Internet Options, or start Internet Explorer and click Tools->Internet Options):

  1. In the Security (tab) click the Restricted Sites (icon), then click the Sites (button) to see the blocked sites.
Note: It's a good ideal to occasionally click the Trusted Sites (icon) to make sure nothing has infiltrated your system by putting in a trusted site which would give such a site more control of your system. Typically on most systems there shouldn't be any trusted sites as it's a big security risk.
  2. In the Privacy (tab) click the Sites (button) to see the Allowed/Blocked Cookies list.

Also, with Spybot S&D (I don't know about the other two as I've never used them) as well as the site names being viewable in Internet Explorer in Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Restricted Sites -> Sites I believe the same site names are also viewable (if running Firefox) in Tools -> Options -> Security -> Exceptions.
