CCleaner "filling" Recycle Bin

 I have this crazy issue with CCleaner recently. It has just been within the past 3 weeks or so and it is getting worse, instead of better. The problem is when I run CCleaner - as it would normally clean out the Recycle Bin, instead, it fills the Recycle Bin with an item (?) that I cannot see when I open the Recycle Bin. (ie: The Recycle Bin Icon fills with an item.. and when I open the Recycle Bin, there is nothing there.).

When you try to empty the Recycle Bin manually (from the Recycle Bin icon), it asks you if you really want to delete the item. The frightening thing is that the item that it asks if you want to delete and you cannot see in the Recycle Bin when you open it, is usually a PROGRAM like... Windows, or one of the important system programs like ''desktop" that it says is in the Recycle Bin. That is really scary. I don't want to delete Windows or my desktop! :o

I looked up the problem on the net and found some interesting information on similar problems.. I tried all the Windows fixes for this problem.. (ie: put another item in the bin manually and manually delete it from within the Recycle Bin), but it keeps happening again and again after I run CCleaner "clean" option (not registry option)... and I am getting frustrated with it re-occurring.

The reason I think it has something to do with CCleaner, is it only happens when I run CCleaner. CCleaner has never filled my Recycle Bin before, always emptied it. I am assuming it is reading something incorrectly and identifying programs as something to be discarded into Recycle Bin. I am not technical enough to be delving into this problem myself, so I am here asking for help.

It has never happened before, so it is something new for me. I have been using CCleaner for some years now and have never had any problems with it before. I like the product alot. :)

I think I MIGHT have solved my own problem. :P

My problem may have been a corrupt Recycle Bin... <_<

I simply followed all the steps to correct a corrupt Recycle Bin on one of the sites that I was reading about similar problems.. and it seems to have solved the problem for now.

I will post again at a later date if I still have CCleaner problems with it.

I should have known better - your product is a good one and I should have looked further than I did before posting it on CCleaner boards. I, however, was mucho frustrated <_< I think that the corrupt Recycle Bin was the real problem creating all the havoc. Hope so anyways, 'cause I sure don't want to have to deal with that garbage again. It was horrible, cleaning up all the mess every time you wanted to delete the recycled items.

Thanks CCleaner Board. I am glad you are here :)

:o Oh no!!

The CCleaner is doing it again!! :( Filling the Recycle Bin with files that are invisible inside the Recycle Bin and then clearly visible ( sticking out of the Recycle Bin Icon) on my desktop.

I run the "fix-tool" for my "corrupt recycle bin" again, restart my computer.. and "voila!" - no more files showing on desktop in recycle bin. I think it is fixed....

Two or three days later, same thing! Run CCleaner and then "invisible" files appear in the recycle bin - showing on desktop and not showing when you open up Recycle Bin.

So I proceed to run the "fix-tool" again and so it goes in a circle. Week after week.

Wonder what CCleaner is doing to "add" "invisible" kind of files to the Recycle Bin. When you try to delete the "files that aren't really there". It gives you a message saying you cannot delete the files, access denied or something like that. One time I was asked "Do you really want to delete Windows?" NO!! of course not!!!

The Tech forums offer many solutions. All temporary, because upon running CCleaner, it brings the files right back into the Recycle Bin (not every time, but often enough to be a real hassle).

Sighhh - This is so frustrating.

Has this problem commenced after something was updated ?

Microsoft Patch Tuesday updates are notorious for their disasters,

or perhaps you have installed something new.

Have you updated CCleaner,

if so it may be worth going back to the previous version.

You have neglected to state what version is in use.

If all else fails you could uncheck half the CCleaner options,

and after a few days or a week assess whether the problem remains,

and then alter the options and try again.

Eventually you may be able to determine which cleansing option is causing you grief.

Yeah tried to narrow it down in previous times it has happened, but with no luck yet. Thought maybe it was a registry cleaner or a disk cleaner, but seems like it isn't that.

There are numerous people on the net with the very same problem, so I am not the only one. They do not mention CCleaner all the time, but I have heard the name pop up and then there are other cleaners mentioned. Some techies think it may be that the cleaners wipe out vital programs when cleaning by mis-identifying them. I am no techie so I can't comment.

I did an update on CCleaner just now, so I currently have the latest. We shall see how that goes.

I did Tuesday update at Microsoft, yes, so you could be right there. I will keep an eye on what exactly happens 'BEFORE' this problem occurs and then report back here.

A very good Idea Alan - and then maybe we can narrow it down to something 'causing' the problem, instead of searching it out without any hint of an idea.

Will report back on this one...... (to be continued..lol)

Ok.. problem continued and remained unsolvable.

I had the problem even after no updates of any kind... so that theory went into the garbage.

I continued to search out solutions to a "corrupt recycle bin" and found this one very effective.

(It lasts the longest between problem times and seems to fix it more solidly).

1. right click on desktop

2. select properties

3. select desktop

4. select customize desktop

5. in the icons section select Recycle Bin (full) and click on it

6. click on Restore Default

7. in the icons section select Recycle Bin (empty) and click on it

8. click on Restore Default

9. click OK

10. close window

11. restart computer

... computer desktop should open with an empty recycle bin. :)
