doiknowu Posted August 16, 2005 Share Posted August 16, 2005 I'm running XP SP2 and my computer won't shut down. I think the problem started either when i uninstalled the AOL 9 software, set up a wireless network or installed a copy of Internet Security 2005 I tried cleaning the registry, adware/sypware removal and run a virus scan. But it won't shut down, only when i hold down the power button. Though today i tried shutting down in safe mode and it worked. So i guess it shuts down in safe mode and not normal mode. There shouldn't be much on my PC as it is only 2 months old. Moderators Andavari Posted August 17, 2005 Moderators Share Posted August 17, 2005 The not properly shutting down problem is a known problem with Dell PC's running WinXP and has been since at least 2003. You can look for a flash BIOS update on the Dell website http://support.dell.com which did solve about 99% of my shutdown issues with my Dell PC. Note, from time to time even after a BIOS update it still may not shutdown properly, and may be caused by certain software, etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's difficult to say if it's their fault or some on-going hardware issue that Dell has. ---- When the problem resurfaced on my system after about one year after applying the BIOS update I ran the Windows File Checker which scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. To use the Windows File Checker 1. Click Start->Run->Type in: sfc.exe /scannow 2. It won't give you any info after it finishes, therefore after it finishes restart your computer. There may be a brief moment during startup where a light blue screen appears which means it's replacing incorrect versions of system files with the correct Microsoft versions. Now rather this will break an installed software product or not I don't know! ---- I also tried this on my system, I'm uncertain if it actually fixed anything though.
