Window opens to sent information to Microsoft. Event log shows this error: Faulting application Defraggler.exe Version 1.7.0.124 Module Defraggler.exe version 1.7.0.124 Fault address 0X000bd900 Things done 1 Insured paging is running and set to system controls paging 2 DCOM Server Process Launcer is active 3 Registered dfrgsnap.dll, dfrgui.dll and dmdskmgr.dll all registered ok. 4 installed the dfrg.inf 5 ran Chkdsk from command console, Completed sucessfully 6 SFC ran to completion 7 AVG Free 8.5 ran no problems found I have attached the files received from running defraggler in debug mode Any help in solving this problem will be greatly appreciated. joe935 Posted March 8, 2009 Author Share Posted March 8, 2009 I know that doing a System restore would likely resolve the problem. And that would be my next step. But we are not prepared to do that as they are not fully backed up. It's my neighbors pc. So I and they were hoping there was something i was missing in my attempt to resolve the problem with out having to format and restore. This is one of those OEM pc without the Windows XP discs so we can't just repair the OS. With all the horror stories I have been reading about the SP3 update i am not ready to update even my PC to it. I guess you haven't heard what havoc the latest Conflicker or Virut mutated trojans can inflict without SP3? The only easy sure way to remove them is a compete FORMAT of the hard drive and install the operating system while disconnected from the Internet to prevent re-infection. With all of the malicious code out there and the ease of accidentally downloading something (Especially with MySpace and other social networking sites), it makes absolutely NO SENSE to not install updates when they come out. However, given that you are not updating your Operating System (Which is a rather integral part of securing your machine), it was meant as a warning. I am glad that you have invested in an Anti-Virus program, however that is not enough. Windows XP Sp3 was largely a security release. I have SP3 installed on 7 machines and have experienced NO problems. Not to say that someone, somewhere hasn't had a problem, but I have not heard of many people having a problem with the Service Pack itself. Most problems were either virus related, or user caused. Given the severity of the damage that can be caused by many of the virus' out there now, there's just no excuse for avoiding a security update that is now almost a year old... Which one are you? I'm not one of those. Been working with computers since The first IBM PC came out. Worked for IBM from 1969 to 1988 when I retired as a Tech Support Specialists on many of IBM Small Office computers upto the System 38. YoKenny it's not nice to make assumptions when you dont have all the facts. What's your resume, yokenny? And it would be nice if we could get back to my original QUESTION, Thank you. Well, if i would be your neighbour, i would tell you to install SP3. I find it hilarious that you quote that you have been a IT guy since 1969. What kind of windows did you run at that time? ... So does it make a difference? No. In my personal experience older IT guys have more problems with newer systems. The old and mostly obsolete knowledge doesn't really help. I am fixing computers since Windows 95 and i am currently supervising over 70 PCs, mostly with Windows XP. I never had any problems with SP3. Only on one stupid notebook it won't install, but that machine is pretty messed up anyway. And it also makes no sense that you installed SP2 and all the updates before and now simply refuse to trust in Microsoft and SP3 because of some unfounded reasons. Of course, there are people with problems related to SP3, but put it into perspective with the huge number of Windows installations worldwide. And no one reports to a newsgroup that the successfully installed SP3... Yes, maybe it won't fix your problem, but it won't hurt either, and would only improve the security of the system. And in 1969 there were no PCs but the first PC OS was MSDos. And if you were like my neighbor you would be a computer illiterate and wouldn't tell me to install SP3 as they have no idea what goes on with PCs. Dont force it, Use a bigger Hammer!
