And the rest!!! . As I posted elsewhere on the forum when I looked into this: The download page states you'll get spam plus its clearly has an adware/spyware element - a quick Eulalyser scan flags up the following in the license agreement (I'm surprised Kapersky agreed to this use of it): You must not "block, disable, or otherwise effect any advertising, advertisement banner window, tabs, links to other sites and services" "Your APS Product information may include registration-related information (such as your e-mail addresses); information about how you use the Software, as well as your responses to offerings and advertisements presented through the Software" "Your APS Product information may be use to personalize the content and advertisements you receive" You must not "block, disable, or otherwise effect any advertising, advertisement banner window, tabs, links to other sites and services" "As a condition for your use of the Software, you agree to receive promotions and periodic e-mail messages from us and our Affiliates." Moderators Andavari Posted October 11, 2006 Moderators Share Posted October 11, 2006 Microsoft Security Updates in the .ISO DVD image format Allows the downloading of one month, or several months of security updates which can be burned to individual DVD's using a freeware or commercial CD/DVD burning application that supports the .ISO DVD image format. They can be used to install the updates on multiple systems or kept for archiving purposes in the event of a Windows re-install later on. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086 Requirement: You must have a DVD burner drive to create the discs! katar
One year later , i write the sequel to my other post http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showto...1224&st=60# I still recommend ALL those great progs (except XP firewall which leaks). now i have just a couple more rec's: anybody who uses a HOSTS file needs also edexter http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/eDexter.html which replaces the "Page Not Found" with a little pink dot. This is common for ads in frames, iframes, or when a website stalls while looking for the Ad Server. Comodo Firewall and AntiVirus http://www.comodo.com/ this is the most attractive FREEWARE you'll find. there is no "professional version" so you get the best they have. The firewall is a mature product and rock solid. The Antivirus is technically in Beta though the final 2.0 version is supposed to be out 6 weeks ago. (it's overdue due to bug-fixing) I use CAVS v.1.1 and it works fine. I like Windows Defender. Note that XP firewall FAILS all leak tests!!!! SO don't use it!!!!!!! Rainlendar is now in v.2.0 and better than ever. Improved options menu. Miniaim.net is a terrific AIM client without bloat. It is under 100k , single exe file. Koolplaya.de is the best video player. under 200k, single exe file. Wordweb, uTorrent, Billy, Netmeter, Foxit, ClipX are still good. I still use all those and burnatonce too. Moderators rridgely Posted November 30, 2006 Author Moderators Share Posted November 30, 2006 Note that XP firewall FAILS all leak tests!!!! SO don't use it!!!!!!! Just in case you don't know this is what a leaktest is: What is a firewall leak-test? Leak tests are small, non-destructive, programs designed by security experts that deliberately attempt to bypass a firewall's outgoing security measures. The rationale behind them is painfully simple: "If this test can get past your computer's security defenses, then so can a hacker." Explicitly designed to help identify a firewall's security flaws, leak tests provide the invaluable function of informing the user whether or not their firewall is providing adequate protection. The tests pose no real threat to the security of a computer as they are harmless simulations of the attack techniques typically used by spyware and Trojan horse programs. There are many leak-testing programs available - each one designed to exploit a particular flaw and each using a particular attack technique to break a firewall's standard protection mechanisms. http://www.matousec.com/projects/windows-p...ewall-leak-test The windows firewall doesn't have any outgoing protection at all. So its not shock it doesn't pass when thats not what it was designed to do. I'm not saying you should use it either, but its not fair to put that against it either. Moderators rridgely Posted December 4, 2006 Author Moderators Share Posted December 4, 2006 THank you professor for the scholarly and condescending reply. I had no idea i sounded so ignorant. And of course it is fair to criticize a product for a missing feature, even such a feature was omitted intentionally. First off, I'm sorry if you felt my post was condescening. That was not my intention at all, and I hope everyone else already knew that. I was just making sure that you(I don't know you or what you know or don't know), people who may read your post, and anyone else would understand what it was you were saying. We get people from all skill levels here and thats what makes this forum so awesome, but you do have to try and keep the things you posted at a level where anyone can understand/know what you talking about. You said it doesn't pass leaktests and I said it was never intended too. Criticizing a program for not having features it was never designed/intended to have is like criticizing a Minivan for not going 150mph. If you want to go 150mph get a sports car. Same thing with the firewall, if you want just something to keep the bad guys out use the windows firewall, if you want something that doesn't let anything unknown out use something else. XanaTos112
had no idea what a leaktest was,so cheers for that. best freeware for me would be : spywareblaster - immunise ur pc against all that spyware out there advanced windowscare personal - pretty nifty all in one program, love it! and ofc the usual - ad-aware, HJT, Spybot always on the lookout for more kool free pc security programs,i usually use downloads.com but curious are there better sites out there? XanaTos112
gonna check all the sites although i have to say that downloads.com layout seems so much better than some of the links above, and seems more accessible edit : just wondering if anybody has used the freeware program "RogueRemover",seems to be pretty slick, and gets 5/5 stars on fileforum.never had heard of it myself, but seems quite interesting Who watches The Watchmen? Moderators rridgely Posted December 30, 2006 Author Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2006 Those sites have much better downloads, less junk, and better reviews. I believe rogue remover is for fake AS programs like spyqwake, ect. Its easy enough to just uninstall them and then use smitfraudfix on them. Moderators rridgely Posted December 31, 2006 Author Moderators Share Posted December 31, 2006 Just the amount of stuff found is not a good way to judge a reg cleaner. Some of that stuff may not have been safe to delete. I haven't tried that program but maybe someone else has. Just make sure you back up before you use it or any other reg cleaner for that matter. Moderators Andavari Posted January 2, 2007 Moderators Share Posted January 2, 2007 Just the amount of stuff found is not a good way to judge a reg cleaner. Some of that stuff may not have been safe to delete. I haven't tried that program but maybe someone else has. It's just as aggressive as RegSeeker is out-of-the-box so to say and I wouldn't recommend it for someone that doesn't know exactly what they're doing, e.g.; such as taking the time to find out if what's found is actually invalid but that can literally take forever. It finds way too much valid stuff that shouldn't be messed with. Although it did find a broken shortcut on my system buried in the SendTo menu that I knew nothing about. The only useful thing I found in it was it's ability to find broken shortcuts in areas where CCleaner and EasyCleaner don't even look, but the registry cleaning portion is way too aggressive.
