malikor
This post covers all bases, and is very thorough. I'd like to post a link to a site that is dedicated to listing freeware security programs. They are also categorized. malikor
XP-AntiSpy is a little utility that lets you disable some built-in update and authetication 'features' in WindowsXP. For example, there's a service running in the background wich is called 'Automatic Updates'. I don`t know what this service transfers from my machine to other machines on the internet, especially the MS ones. So I play it safe and disable such functions. If you like, you can even disable these function manually, by going through the System and checking or unchecking some checkboxes. This will take you approximately half an hour. But why wasting time when a little neat utility can do the same in 1 minute? XP-Antispy was successfully tested by many users and was found to disable all the known 'Suspicious' Functions in WindowsXP. Download it here. The "Automatic Updates" are for the Windows updats you get monthly. With that disabled you won't get notified when updates are available. Not a big problem as long as you visit the update site a maunally down load the patches every month.

You can turn the service back on once a month to do the manual update. I do this with AVG AS. I keep the service for it disabled and turn it on when I need to update or scan with AVG AS. Anthony A
I like SilentNight MicroBurner because it is free, has all the features I'm looking for and it is stand-alone, this requiring no installation. The screen shot for that is of the pro version and it looks full featured. Whats missing in the free version? I couldn't find a comparison chart anywhere. Moderators rridgely Posted March 13, 2008 Author Moderators Share Posted March 13, 2008 Now that ashampoo has released that permanently free version I see no reason to use anything else. I was already using it for everything before but now its just a no brainer. I agree it's very good but this Silentnight Microburner says it's portable and can be run from a USB drive. I am currently using Deepburner Portable on my USB drive and it's OK.
sunnytimes
this thread has been great!! thank you all .. i found this handy freeware app the other day , clone maxx .. it makes an identical copy of a hard drive onto another drive regardless of file system or OS .. i booted it off a CD and cloned our server onto another hard drive and after tested it and it booted the server no problem exactly like the other drive. the free version has a few limitations but the only one i noticed was it wouldn't let me clone to a drive of the same size , i had to clone a 20 gig onto a 40 gig drive , worked fine tho. http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/clone_maxx....htm?Language=1 enjoy :]

Icedrake
Hello everyone! I have some freeware recommendations, if they haven't been posted here already. Auslogics Disk Defrag: It's a great program at defragging your computer and I've used it a lot with out any problems. Very user-friendly too. Auslogics Registry Defrag: Unlike some registry cleaning/defragging programs, Auslogics Registry Defrag doesn't screw up your computer. A quick reboot is all you need. It's great and I've used it for some time without any problems. Very user-friendly too.

Talldog9
SMPlayer - "SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more. One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave... don't worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume..." Winapp2.ini
For those of you who have quicktime, but dont use programs dependent upon it such as iTunes, theres this http://www.free-codecs.com/download/quickt...alternative.htm Its the same thing, but smaller and makes quicktime dependent programs not work . Clean My Registry: I'm pretty anal about having a clean registry, I have no less than 5 registry cleaners and a registry optimizer I found this to be a pretty good program http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,...scription.html# Free Ram XP Pro: This is another program I love- It frees up large amounts of ram on command or periodically. It only frees ram on the motherboard, of course. http://www.yourwaresolutions.com/software.html#framxpro DosBox- I personally LOVE the Duke Nukem Atomic Edition series, and all its addons. However I doesnt work properly on my current system. This emulator helped me with that little problem- even though I'd already downloaded eDuke32 xD http://www.dosbox.com/ XP on Mac - Being that I loath the Mac OS- and all the snotty kids in my grade that use it - I encourage the use of this program I received in a PC World Daily Downloads email http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,...escription.html CCleaner - Do I need to elaborate? www.CCleaner.com/ Quake III Arena: http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quake/quake3-arena/ A great little toy- useful for killing time in my opinion. But not likely you'll find anyone playing on a server so fight the computer For Linux- I'd say Nexiuz but I dont know the website of the most amazing interactive fps for linux off the top of my head also- ET Quake Wars is good too. again, my Linux corrupted my mbr so I have to boot it on a disc to use it partially. It stole a 32 GB partition of my hard disk, lol. I could get it back but I like having 200GB on my windows one for now . winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github
