I have Windows Defender installed and use the built in updater. Is this a different program or the same thing?

I have never been able to get the built in updater get the latest update even when I ask it to during a Quick scan on my XP SP3 systems. Maybe I'm not patient enough. I don't care if it's a few days behind. I hardly ever scan with Windows Defender. I only keep it because I already have it installed and it's not causing any problems. I wouldn't install it again though I have several other apps I prefer to it.
