Free Space Wipe

Since CCleaner already provides secure deletion of files it removes after it runs, I would love to see a feature that allows for a secure wipe (DOD, NSA, Gutmann, etc.) for hard drive free space.

I disagree. Even as an option, it's another chunk of code to download, carry around and possibly cause errors. There are enough specialised free-space 'wipers' available already.

 

You can overwrite all your data with Recuva, if you do a deep scan and then select all found for secure deletion. That's if you have a few days to spare. Don't blame me if it never finishes... As for the rest of the disk it's pointless overwriting space that's never been allocated.

 

All this multi-overwriting is overblown, as Gutmann himself stated in the 90's. One overwrite is enought to secure anything that we need to eradicate. All this guff about electron scanning is sci-fi. Who has ever recovered overwritten data? What enterprise offers to do this today? What do you keep on your PC?

Yes there certainly is debate over the existance of electron scanning tehniques for data recovery.

 

FWIW, I find little performance overhead between 1 pass and 3 pass dod compliant so what the heck I say

 

Piriform can quite easily look at free open source code for code examples, and it if were from a BSD license Piriform could implement it without restriction and not have to pass on the code like in GPL.

Piriform can quite easily look at free open source code for code examples, and it if were from a BSD license Piriform could implement it without restriction and not have to pass on the code like in GPL.

Cleaning of files and folders and making disk space available for re-use is the basic function of CCleaner.

This without the added requirments of space and complexity is what I would like to see continued.

The dangers and complexities and greatly increased run times are for more specialized programs such as Recuva.

Respectfully I dont agree - as a user Im happy for the extra runtime of CCleaner in 3 pass wipe mode. As for code bloat, well, I like having one single app installed to manage cleanups as well as secure deletion of those cleanups. The code for secure deletion is already in CCleaner and all this thread is suggesting is to use the existing secure deletion alogorithm in the code to enable a free space secure deletion option as well.

But then I don't work for the FBI nor CIA nor Canadian CSIS organizations and I'm not into kiddy pr0n so whatever is on my hard drive is pretty boring stuff unless the fact that I like to watch British comedy and CBC streaming news and the occasional streaming PBS program is considered some form of subversive or terrorist act.
