HELP! Registry/System Restore

islandgirl

Recommended Posts

I fixed some of the registry keys in CCleaner, the ones that were listed as left overs from uninstalls. I did not do a reg backup within CCleaner. I thought those keys were safe to remove. Well big mistake. A lot of programs don't work now. I did a Windows System Restore to the last checkpoint earlier today before I made the changes. It didn't restore those registry keys, programs still don't work. HELP!

Islandgirl,

Have you tried using another system restore point?

What programs are affected? Would you be able to reinstall them?

Did you have anything ticked in the advanced section when you did the reg clean?

At least you were honest and admitted you didn't make a reg backup. They do work for most people.

tomate,

Your problem is a bit different as you did make reg backups and you haven't used system restore.

Also only one piece of your software is causing a problem apparently, Crystal reports formula editor

have you tried excluding it from CCleaner?

Is this anything like your problem?

Also perhaps the specialised help for this software may be the road to go down

Thanks a lot for the link to businessobjects... That was that! Such a stupid problem. There is no problem with the registry but with...the display of my two srceens... A few days ago, I've changed my workplace and the left screen where the formula editor window was opening is now my right screen so that when I open the formula editor, it's opened but I can't see it. Now it's good....

Thanks a lot

I did the last system restore point. Yesterday I had removed Yahoo Jukebox then I did the registry cleaner. The restore brought me back to before I removed the Yahoo Jukebox so you would think it would restore the registry keys. What is the purpose of Windows System Restore? It's my understanding that it is supposed to restore the registry.

I lost some freeware such as RealPlayer, that I can replace. I lost all the programs that were pre-loaded when I got the computer. I lost all the Roxio software: MyDVD, Creator... Those I can't reinstall.

Stuff Happens!!!

I am going to refer you to a reply I made and I want you to read it carefully.Understand what it is saying.

I want you to install ERUNT and NTREGOPT.

Run ERUNT.

Return here and promise that you have done as I said.

You will receive more advice and possibly some good news.

I am relatively new to PCs myself, but I have decades of computer experience.

Thank you for your input. I read the link and added to favorites. I will check out the software you suggested as soon as I resolve a bunch of other issues.

It turns out the system restore point I did restored the registry keys. I did a CCleaner registry scan and the keys are back. I must have had the problems before and didn't know it.

It turns out recent updates of Windows XP, Media Player and Internet Explorer impaired a lot of my non-Microsoft programs. I did what ever roll-backs I could, removed all components, and got some of my programs back. For the rest, all involved parties or manufacturers do not offer a resolution. They all want you to buy the latest software.

Even though I was able to revert what I did in CCleaner, it scared me enough to never touch the registry either directly or with any software no matter how safe it seems. I'll continue using CCleaner in cleaner mode with default settings.

I have another issue with the inablility of removing Musicmatch after Yahoo Jukebox impaired it. Of course Yahoo will not resolve the issue. Add/Remove won't uninstall it. CCleaner can't uninstall. I tried Revo and I also get the same setup.exe error. However in safe mode, which is a step above basic removal, Revo offers to delete less than 100 registry keys. In moderate mode it offers to remove 9000! That seems like a lot. Perhaps it isn't. There is no way I'll try that!

Hi again islandgirl,

Panic causes people to act or react in so many ways.

Please take my advice and download that software and run ERUNT NOW!!! It will save you when System Restore lets you down.Do this before you try to resolve those other issues.

IT IS THAT IMPORTANT.

You apparently had a lot of things going on at one time and lost control over it.Fortunately for you,you stayed calm and gained back your control over the situation. At least you kept yourself under control and seem to have taken a very methodical approach to the situation. My first evaluation was that you were a very new user. Now it seems that you have more experience than I imagined. The advice below is for you and other new users. You may already do these things.

NEW USERS ADVICE

This is a very valuable learning experience for you.

The more experienced user learns to do things one at a time when it comes to computers and their maintenance.Even when setting up a new computer,we attempt to keep to very logically paced steps.

That way when something seems to be not quite right,we can narrow in to where the problem occurred.

New and old users alike have control over when and what should be installed or uninstalled.

Automatic updates from MS can even be controlled so that many things are downloaded but not installed until you are ready.MS has always downloaded things to me in the right order at the right time.Just don't try to do too many things at once.Updates one day.Uninstall one application another day.Install a new App another day. That way you are always in control of the situation. Many things at one time results in an uncontrollable mess.

I have seen many people come to the forum or CCleaner for a miracle cure.It was too late for them. They had panicked and did some improper things,in the wrong order,at the wrong time and thoroughly negated any chance of recovery.

http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=96510 Registry changes and ERUNT and NTREGOPT advice

I recommended ERUNT and NTREGOPT to you because they are small, fast and simple. Most importantly they require no maintenance.ERUNT is used by many experienced PC users. It provides an alternative to Windows System Restore. It is not a replacement but a very dependable Registry and other important files backup and Emergency Recovery utility. After you install and use it,print off the documentation and store it with your install discs. It is only 12 or 13 pages long but oh so valuable. It is a valuable document when needed. It will help users to stay calm and do things logically to recover control of their PC.

P.S. EDIT July 19,2008 This is in regards to ERUNT and NTREGOPT for Vista users. Many Vista users are now turning UAC back on after SP1 has corrected many problems. You are advised by the author of ERUNT and NTREGOPT to only rely on their use for Vista with UAC turned off.

Do not turn off System Restore. It may be your last chance sometimes. If you need the disk space you can decrease it's size but never turn it off.

You should create a manual system restore point and run ERUNT each time you are going to do some maintenance to your system.

Manual System Restore Points are more reliable than the automatic ones.

P.S. EDIT JULY 19,2008 This is an update as regards System Restore for Vista users.

With the advent of Vista SP1 many of the early problems with UAC have been corrected.Vista System Restore points are much more reliable and detailed than WinXP as of now.(This could change for the better in WinXP.)

Don't do disk Defrags until you are sure everything is stable after maintenance.

Don't do "secure delete" of everything you clean.Otherwise, you have no chance of recovering accidentally deleted files such as pictures and important data.

Special "secure delete" settings CCleaner.ini files can be set up for this and only run when needed.

In CCleaner Options > Advanced always have the option checked to prompt for back-up.Only foolish users don't do back ups.

Do not use the Advanced options in the Cleaner except Custom files and folders. The other options are for ADVANCED USERS ONLY.This holds true for Registry cleaning and the Tools feature.

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL THAT YOU DO ON THE COMPUTER IS THE SUBJECT OF BACKUPS.

Many users do not properly backup because they are unfamiliar with the process.

I am recommending a well designed and simple to use and FREE backup program. This is especially important for new users.Simple and reliable.

This program is written by a lady who has written many programs over the years. She is a down home kind of lady with an excellent reputation and website. Her programs are self explanatory.

All you have to keep in mind about backups is that you have a source(what you want to backup) and a destination (an exact copy of your source).

By using the browse button, you can start off setting up a job that copies C:\My Documents to C:\ZZZBACKUP\MyDocuments .There is reason for the ZZZ before the rest of the folder name.

The name of the job we can call Backup My Documents. Most users have never done that.

Simple as that. You will learn as you go.Just select download, select save and start running the program. You can't harm anything, but you can sleep a lot easier from now on.Use her Defaults and learn to use other options as you learn. The newsletters relating to the development of Replicator are a logical learning method also. They are very important to understand some of the finer details of some options.

She is a wonderful lady with wonderful Free software.

Read her newsletters in sequence and learn about both.

http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp Karen's Replicator

Bookmark it and save to Favorites.

The next job we can call "C Drive Backup except Exclusions".

Now you develop that and you are a Replicator EXPERT in a few short sessions.Just keep using the Help file and her Newsletters and "you can do it" attitude.

The first backup of anything takes the longest. From then on it is a matter of backing up what has changed.

Nice thing it is automatic. All you have to do is run the job manually as often as you like or it can be run on a scheduled basis.I only have one hard drive that is why I copy from Drive "C" to Drive "C". When I get my External Hard Drive I will backup to that.

P.S. EDIT JULY 19,2008 Well, I got my External Hard Drive and it was very inexpensive compared to the value of the data it is going to backup.( Maybe $1000 to $1 investment. A real "no-brainer" decision that was.)

Believe me I feel safer already.

I can keep it in safe place when I shutdown.

Well,I can even set up a job and backup everything to CDs or DVDs and keep them in a safe deposit box or at home or the office fireproof safe etc.

Once you have done these things, islandgirl, then you will be ready to handle those other issues in safety.

Regarding your "lost" programs, start CCleaner and look in the Tools > Uninstall listing and see if they are still listed. If so you can recover their use. If they are gone, you will find some excellent alternative Free products, recommended and discussed in the forum.

You can start off at this link. These tutorials are written by Moderators and highly experienced members.

http://internetrotsyourbrain.com/rridgely/freesoftware.htm Read his other Posts(Buttons on left)

In regards to Musicmatch and Yahoo Jukebox you will find that many multimedia products cause conflicts with each other. This is an area that I personally don't have the expertise to advise you. However I do recommend that you make a post in the software forum and you will receive some excellent advice there.

The best advice when uninstalling software is to go to the software manufacturers website for specific instructions to uninstall a specific product. Some times it is advisable to reinstall software to properly or successfully uninstall it.

Good Luck,

:) davey
