The new algorithm is a crap.

To defrag Freespace with 850 files and 100 MB takes nearly an hour. :angry:

It only sorts the files from largest to smallest.

What a piece of junk.

I have a 18.6 GB hard drive with 5.22 GB used.

3311 folders with 25,665 files.

It took only 18 minutes to defrag INCLUDING freespace.

I must admit that some earlier versions of Defragger had their problems,

but this newest release works perfect for me. :)

That is when your drive is pre-defragged.

Format a partition of your HDD with NTFS format and then copy the contents of your HDD to this partition.

Then defrag and you will see.

Hi six..pack,

Are you going to continue to give us the story in dribs and drabs.

Or do we get an informative post? Facts are needed not opinions.

Defraggler ver.

OS,edition ,32bit or 64bit and version ?

Browsers and ver.?

Security software and ver?

Other data you think might be relevant?

What did you do and then what happened?

Which partition on which physical drive?

Partition sizes?

Cluster sizes?

What options were being used ?

Other tasks running?

Could you run again using debug mode?

Copying all of the files over like that should put them there defragmented. When I had to reformat a partition of my hard drive and copy files over they were put back defragmented.

Also, how many files and what kinds of files are you talking about? Hundreds or thousands of small files will take longer to defrag than several large files, I've noticed. In the case of the small files I doubt them being fragmented will be terribly apparent.

Yes, you are right.

The files are defragmented.

But the 'defragging freespace' is the problem.

And I have very small files (lower than 1,000 Bytes) on my drive.

Defraggler sorts them in order of size.

From high to low. Maybe searching for the next file takes the time.

Do you know the speed of Windows 98 defragger? That is the same.

I'm pretty sure defraggler doesn't sort by file size. At least get your fact straight when you complain about something being crap.

And 850 file totaling 100 MB? Don't tell me you are trying to defrag a flash drive... I hope you know that defragging flash drive makes ZERO speed difference and every time you write to flash drive it gets damaged.

Dear Windhydra,

but I'm pretty sure that Defraggler sorts by size.

The Freespace defragging indicates the files which in process. It is slow enough to read the title.

So I can verify the size between the files.

I don't defrag a flash drive. It is a hard drive disk.

Yes, and I have very small files.

Do you want to see one directory:

OK, that works faster. (I guess the same speed as copying from one drive to another)

Information which are asked for:

OS: Windows XP SP2 32 Bit.

Drive E: 10 GB formatted as NTFS - cluster size known

Browser? necessary? Avant Browser - but is is an adapter of IE 6.0

Security software? Necessary? AVG 7.5 and AVG 8.0 (but two-way, not both together)

I don't run different programs because I was watching the work.

CPU 1.4 GHz

Memory 1.5 GB fast CL2 chips

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But what das a defrag program do?
It does not move files! It only moves the contents of the clusters.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In addition to that:

File defragging works fast. The problem is Freespace defragging.

I see. So you mean Defraggler works on the larger file first? Or are you talking about Defraggler puts larger files at the beginning of the drive?

Anyway, I tried running free space defrag and it does NEITHER. Defraggler did not defrag the large files first, nor did it move the largest file (2 gig on that drive) to the front.

And as for consolidating free space, Defraggler is probably not your best choice. You should try jkdefrag, which seems to be the best freeware at free space defrag.

I try to expalin it.

I formatted one of my drives.

Then I copied back all my files (size and quantity in post #1)

Now I defragged my drive and have the indication of the locations. My files are located anywhere and they are not fragmented.

Now the Freespace Defraggler starts and he works on the largest files first and put it to the beginning of the indicated hard drive space.

If you already had defragged your drive and would copy a large file to it, it will not put it to the beginning. It does not touch the older positions of the other files.

But I will search for jkdefrag.

Thank you.

I tried JkDefrag.

After installing AVG said: JkDefragGUI.exe is infected.

Worm/Autoit.AIG

:angry:

I ran the defrag file.

The picture looks like this.

@Six-pack...

JkDefragGUI is written by Emiel Wieldraaijer ( http://www.emro.nl/freeware ) using AutoIt

( http://www.autoitscript.com ), and unfortunately, some virus writers have used this to

produce their malware, so sometimes false positives are produced by virus scanners. You

could try submitting the file to VirusTotal ( http://www.virustotal.com ) to see if other antivirus

tools find anything. The chances are that if less than 2 or 3 out of 32 tools identify anything

they are probably false positives.

The actual defragging is effected by Jeroen Kessels' JkDefrag, and whilst this is an excellent

defragger, it's display is rather poor compared to Defraggler (for example), as you no doubt

have noted when you posted an image of it.

This is available directly from Jeroen's own site: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/

When you first run JkDefragGUI, it should download and install a copy of JkDefrag, but I note

that your version of JkDefrag appears to be version 3.26. This is a bit odd, as that is very

old - version 3.34 was released on 01/02/2008, so maybe you have a rogue version ?

Hi thm,

thank you for your reply.

The JKDefrag.version is that what I found in internet. I downloaded and installed it and had these problems.

I know virustotal.com but I was not able to upload the file. It says uploaded 0 bytes.

I also could't copy or zip this file. It was blocked by my system.

But I could move it to quarantine with AVG and then I sent it to virus@grisoft.cz

They already answered and told me that they will fix it in the next database. It is a wrong alert.

Thank for the link. I will give it a try.

Best regards

Six
