Defragging freespace took eaons....why?

I have WinXP. Tried to defrag a drive with Thunderbird on it tonight. Defragged the files on the drive rapidly. Then Defragger tried to defrag the "freespace." Took forever (like 25 minutes until I killed the process). Defragging the files took just a few minutes.

Why is this? What can be fragmented about free space?

The drive in question is a SCSI, RAID-1'd drive.

Hello again,

"Defraggling" free space is more disk optimization than any sort of defragmentation. The program is trying to move as much as possible to the fastest part of the drive.

You don't have to do this all in one operation.Stop when you like. You should see that your files are being moved to the outer part of the drive. This can take some time depending on where the files are and the file sizes.

I have the same problem.

Do you have fixed pagefile? (mine is custom size at 800 Mb)
