I recently went on a software hunt to replace all of my software with free alternatives preferably open source software. The hunt took me months and i found a lot of dodgy software but by enlarge the software alternatives i found are better then the pay for apps i had before. Also i hated the fact i would install a app a app that does not need to operate on-line but yet it would still ask to get on-line(wtf is that all about) now that does not happen also i can now use my pc as soon as my pc starts rather then go and get a drink and wait 5 minutes for all the apps to start. Now thanks to faster more efficient apps and the fact i have found a app which allows me so remove start up apps. These are the results :D.

The following apps are all free contain no spyware and or adware, but(there is always a but) avast anti virus does require you to register which is free and they email a code which you put in the app, mainly because if you are a company you have to pay for it.

First is i found and now use a app called nLite(http://www.nliteos.com/) which allows you to remove windows applications which you do not use i.e. windows movie maker, windows messenger, system restore, outlook express, disability option, xp games(pinball etc) etc and create a bookable iso. Put it this way before tweaking my xp it weight in around 590Mb now it is 248Mb.(yes those number are correct)

Before=Microsoft Office*****After=OpenOffice http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/OpenO...ws/1009574294/1

Another WoW program think of something Microsoft Office can do and for me OpenOffice will do the same.

I totally agree with you englishmen, why pay if you can get it for free, maybe it is an english thing, the most expensive piece of software I have is Office 2000, which I only have because all the schools use MS Office, once my kids leave school, I am uninstalling it and using OpenOffice all the time.

The only other reason that I would have kept MS office is for Frontpage, but I now use NVU and manual coding for websites anyway.

By the way I take it you are actually an Englishman, you never posted in the Where do we come from? thread.

Thanks for the feed back guys i have now reposted in the thread freeware list and i am from London in the Uk. Thanks for the suggestions agumon as i said i have tried a load of software some dodgy and i have actualy tried all the apps you recommended.

*I decided not to keep microsoft antispyware for 2 reasons the first one is a bit stupid but i don't like the fact that i actualy use to have to have a app call giant antispyware then Microsoft bought the company Giant. They then simply removed all reference to Giant within the app and replaced it with micosoft but from what i can see the app is exactley the same in terms of the way it looks(see screenshots) and how good the engine is. http://www.morenews.ru/arhive/2004-11-20/antispyware.jpg http://blognewschannel.com/images/microsof...tem-summary.gif

The second being that i read somewhere that when it comes out of beta or soon after you will have to pay a subscriptions to download the latest definition. And for this reason i thought i would get rid of the problem with changing back to spybot etc bye just sticking with them in the first place.

*With the office apps i don't really use a office app that much but when i do i only need a Word like applications and as OpenOffice has a much smaller size print on the Hd i thought i would stick with that. I do agree tho that Microsoft Office is good but then one thing comes up why pay for it when you can get it for free.

*I did try registry compactor but i found that NTREGOPT is better because you start it and it asks you one question, Do you want to start the process. Simple.

*CdBurnerXp Pro "i found a couple alternatives but the discs were coaster fired straight after burning." That's the app i was talking about and as i burn discs to back up my data. And as the first disc i wrote with it is now my tea cup coaster it did not give me a lot of confidence that my data would be safe.

i assume you are replying to me... what i said is

... not asking to a new one...

actually giant antispyware is a very good antispyware tool... so hope microsoft will not trash it... :)

Any how i belive openoffice is better then Micorosft office and the use of spybot, spwareblaster & ad-aware are better the Giant antispyware oops i mean microsft anitspyware

Believe it or not, Microsoft Anti-Spyware is better than Ad-Aware Pro.

Recently I purposefully infected myself with spyware (windupdates and p2pnetworking) to study how the cleaners handled it and I ran my usual routine. Ad-Aware caught some, Spybot - 0, MSAS caught a LOT that Ad-Aware missed. At least four items.

Ok i understand most of you use openoffice instead of Microsoft Word. What do you use for powerpoints and excels and stuff?

Oppen Office can make those as well. To make them compatible with MS office just save them as an office documents (File, save as). I know it works because I use them all the time.

Yeah, have you never used it before? When you download it it has four programs writer-word, impress-power point, calc-excell, and draw-?

Make sure you get the 2.0 beta it is much better than the current release (1.1.4?).

no never use open before. Word and power point take up to much space :(

If you already have MS office your probably not going to want to want to use open office. But If your like me and the only version of office you have is 97 than you should deffinately use Open Office. Also Openoffice can be used on Macs and Linux so they can create MS office compatible doccuments as well.

Gimp was one of the apps i tried but i could not really get hang of it so give up on it, maybe ill give it a longer try. I also only use OpenOffice for the word app which i hardly use anyway but at leasts its there when i need it.
