Defraggler debug mode

Starting Defraggler in debug mode produces a very useful error log that helps us find and fix bugs. It also tells us a few important things about your computer. To start Defraggler in debug mode, do this:

1 - If you installed Defraggler in the default location,

  • Press and hold the Start button and press R (opens the Run window)
  • Cut an paste this

"C:\Program Files\Defraggler\defraggler.exe" /debug

  • Press enter

2 - If you installed Defraggler in a custom location,

  • The same as (1), but substitute C:\Program Files\Defraggler for the custom path

You should now see [Debug] in the bottom status bar of Defraggler.

The error log will be created as soon as you start Defraggler and will be in the same folder as the exe (so almost certainly C:\Program Files\Defraggler). The file will be called 'Defraggler_log[version][date].txt'. PM me for an email address to send it to, or you can post it directly in the forum (if it's not too big).

:)

I've jumped through all the hoops to register and uploaded the log as an attachment, but I'm still not clear on how to get it to you. It's only 20 KB so I'll try here.

The problem *seems* to be that the fragments are too big, but there is 35% free space on the drive, so I'm not sure.

Hope you can tell me what to do about it. Thanks.

hi, i'm using defraggler for about 2 weeks, but still i can't analyse the drive, it always says analysis failed eventhough i run it as administrator.

and this the log..i hope you can tell me how to fix this error because i really love this program.

I just downloaded and installed draggler for the first time on a Vista Ultimate box. I received an "Analysis Failed" error both times I ran it (once as normal user and second as "Run As Administrator"... attached is the error log file.

Any one have any ideas on what is causing this error?

Steve

I, along with some other people, have lost a lot of free space to using Defraggler ( approx. 150 GB / 1 TB on D: and approx. 50 GB / 320 GB on C: ). While this is not a pressing problem for me, it is particularly annoying.

I have attached a screenshot clearly showing just how much space is occupied by all the files on D: and how much free/used space is reported by Windows.

I would also be quite happy to run more tests and attach debug logs.

If anyone out there knows a fix for this, please let me know.

This happened to me a few times on my Vista laptop, and judging by the screen shot you also have Vista. I couldn't think of any way to remove them other than coping everything useful off of it and reformat the partition. Kind of interesting isn't it that you lost roughly 15% of the capacity on each partition. The partition I had this problem on was about 50GB and it lost roughly 7GB to a temp file I believe Defraggler made, which also is roughly 15% of the drive. All I really know, other than those stats, is that I only lose space when defragging the entire drive, just defragging files doesn't do it.

Greetings,

I have been using Defraggler for several months, absolutely love it, and have recommended it to many friends and family. I've personally run on at least eight machines and it ran flawlessly on ever one, until now. I am trying to run it on a friend's machine and it never goes above 0% or 1% if I try to defrag all the files. If I do just one or a few files at time it will work. But when there are over 1,000 files to defrag it's clearly not possible to do just a few at a time. I just ran the latest attempt in debug mode. It hung at 0% so I first paused it and then stopped it. The results are shown below. Your help in resoving this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello everyone :-))

I have been using CCleaner for long time now ..... and also defraggler has become a MUST !!!

With XP in all souces is fine .... but in Vista SP1 either 32 or 64 is not ... keeps failing all the time........ but strange is the defragging of free space does not fail so far, not sure wheter is important but who knows

Attaching the debug which is identical to others ......

I have attached the log file from the debug mode.

Just thought I would pass on this bug report to the software developers. This is the first time I have come across Defraggler having problems with C:\$MFT.

The Acer laptop (Windows XP PRO SP3) goes all the way to 100% complete but remains there for a long time with not much in the way of hard drive activity. The laptop has Defragger V1.02.078(Beta) installed.

Cheers,

Robert

Yep, this DEBUG mode is indeed useful because when looking at the map in Defraggler I do get the impression the program doesn't always defrags ALL the the free space.

There are two "Defrag freespace" options.

1) "Defrag free space".

2) "Defrag free space (allow fragmentation)".

Option 1) defrags the drive WITH (some) additional defragmentation of files. And I do get the impression that it also skips files. Or are these files which are write protected, hidden, system files by the WINDOWS system and therefore skipped by DEFRAGGLE ?

This becomes apparent when after one manually defrags individual files. By looking at the map, one can make a guess where defragged files will be placed but sometimes the program seems to have a different opinion and places the files in a different spot.

I have added a logfile containing the following actions:

1. "Defrag freespace".

2. "Defrag freespace (allow fragmentation)".

3. Defragged a number of individual files.

Is the loss of free space due to the fact that you have indexed that drive ??

Hi Willy2,

Welcome :D

The problem at the time was Defraggler seemed to have a few bugs and would tie space within System Restore files. I don't know for sure that this problem is completely fixed or not.

What are your thoughts ?

This is a follow up on post #18 of this thread.

Below in the attachment a zipped file containing a picture which makes it clear what went wrong with the "Defrag free space" options. During execution of one (or both) option(s) some (a lot of (??)) files are skipped. Perhaps these files are designated Hidden, System or Write Protected by Windows XP and therefore skipped by Defraggler ?

After I used one (or both) "Defrag free space" option(s), I manually defragged one particular file (in dark blue in the picture). It's clear there's a empty gap right in front of that file. And that is proof files are skipped by "Defrag free space".

I came across something weird. I think I have further proof that the option(s) "Defrag freespace" must be recoded/re-programmed.

The following happened:

Before I used the option "Defrag freespace" (without "allow fragmentation" !!) I had no fragmented files on my drive, but after I used this option I had three (!!) defragmented files.

Then I manually defragmented these three files. Two files were defragmented without any strange behaviour. But the third file showed some weird behaviour. It was moved from spot X to a place with plenty free space and was defragmented. But apparently the program was satisfied and - according to the drivemap - moved the file back to that very same spot X, this time the filelist said that it was defragmented. It probably wasn't the very same spot were it was "pulled" from but it certainly looked like it.
