New Firefox 3.0 alpha blocks malware

Among the security provisions debuting in the new alpha of "Gran Paradiso," the code name for Firefox 3.0, are built-in anti-malware warnings and protection against rogue extension updates, according to documentation Mozilla posted to its Web site.

 

The malware blocker, which was first mocked up in June, will block Web sites thought to contain malicious downloads. The feature, a companion to the phishing site alert system in the current Firefox 2.0, will use information provided by Google Inc. to flag potentially-dangerous sites, warn anyone trying to reach those URLs with Firefox and automatically block access to the site.

This is ridiculous. I want a fast, slim browser. Not an internet security suite/browser client all-in-one. Firefox was created because the Mozilla suite was too large. Now, Firefox is becoming too large.

What gran paradiso needs is a default install that runs on the kernel in a low security process like IE7 on Vista. All these things about better managing add ons and so forth is a symptom not a root cause fix. In fact the fix is not to be "root". In IE7 default in Vista nothing can happen like this without credentials challenges.

Well if it blocks malware, I wonder what it's going to do against innocent websites/forums that have been hacked - like when this very forum was hacked and now Google still has that stupid warning about it when doing searches.

Firefox users you better hope the "malware blocking" part of the new firefox wasn't what was in Netscape 8. Never tried netscape 8? Give it a shot, you will be in for a surprise.(and not a good one.)

Please inform me...I haven't used Netscape since like the 5th grade, when my elementary school used iMacs (yes, the colorful ones.)
