Vista gets a public challenge

Humpty

Gutmann also outlined that the price of hardware for PCs is rising exponentially because vendors can't approve Vista compatible drivers that meet the strict security requirements. One requirement that the vendors must adhere to is getting a driver to pass standards set forth by not only Microsoft, but film studios such as MGM, 20th Century Fox, and Disney in the form of written approval. One thing Gutmann outlined in his presentation was a case where graphics card maker ATI met problems developing drivers that were Vista compatible due to ever changing content protection schemes set forth by Microsoft. After many delays, ATI finally released a driver that inevitably crashed Vista when loaded and had to halt upgrade schedules set forth by Dell and Gateway.

Gutmann argued in his statement that Microsoft developed Vista with the sole intention of appeasing Hollywood and perhaps gained some form of monetary compensation for their efforts. He feels that they should have focused more on securing the user from malicious attacks on the Internet than shielding the users from themselves.

With all the problems Vista has which is even evident in these very forums with the Piriform software that's available it's rather clear that Vista isn't worth the trouble. Time to flush it and use something different.

Exactly what I've done Andavari.

Made a ghost image of the Vista install on this new machine, formatted - installed XP pro.

Will ghost back to Vista every now and then just to remind myself what "slow and bloated" is.

Still have a couple of Vista virtual drives that I can fire up if I want a game of Chess or Mahjong which are about the only things I liked about Vista!

Actually I really like Chess on Vista. Surprisingly at least there is one good thing about Vista!

I've found most of the games ported to XP (haven't tried them yet) but can't find Chess...

I've started playing Chess again just recently, (very rusty), and the only chess program I have is "Slow Chess Blitz", which I found a couple of months ago.

Features:

  • Internet/Network Play Support! Set up a server, have your friends connect, and play them. more
  • Analyze mode to suggest the best move (or moves in multi-variation mode) for any position.
  • Winboard and UCI support, so you can use it outside its own GUI. more
  • Difficulty Level by time per move, number of ply, or number of nodes
  • PGN support for saving / loading games.
  • Copy / Paste text transcripts, positions, or the game state.
  • Game transcript box, and take back/ redo move buttons for playback of games.
  • Player Clocks & Set Timelimit option.
  • Adjustable search options (hashtable, pondering, personalties.)

Don't know how it compares to others, but seems pretty good, and is a complete program in itself, and free.

I hope that makes sense, as I'm only just discovering the seperate GUI's and Engines world of Chess.

If you guys could guide me to anything else, I'd appreciate it.

Just one question, what are "endgame bitbases"?

I don't know, yet. I've only noticed that file and downloaded it since I checked the link in that post, and had another look over the site.

Off the top of my head, I would say maybe examples of interesting end games, but the term "bitbases" is new to me as well.

I'm gonna have a look at it later.

One thing I'll mention about Slow Chess, is that while "thinking", it just about maxes out CPU resources. At the moment I've 512mb.

I wonder if that's the same with all Chess programs?

Edit: Sorry lotse, forgot to mention, no, you don't need the "bitbases" to play.
