LEEnoble
My PC running Windows XP SP2 won't shut down or restart, I've tryed from the start menu and from the shut down option in Task Manager to no avail. I've even tryed 3rd party shut down managers which don't work either. I've tryed loads of PC maintenance tools, registry cleaners etc but they haven't fixed the problem. But my PC still shuts down when running in safe mode, just not in normal mode. This problem has been going on for 3 weeks now and i've no idea how to fix it. Heres a HiJackThis log of my current running processes: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 18:37:05, on 08/05/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ISSVC.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 3.0\PhotoshopElementsFileAgent.exe D:\Server\Apache2\bin\Apache.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~2\NORTON~3\GHOSTS~2.EXE C:\Program Files\PalickSoft\HDD Temperature\HDDTSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~2\NORTON~1\NPROTECT.EXE C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 3.0\PhotoshopElementsDeviceConnect.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~2\NORTON~1\SPEEDD~1\NOPDB.EXE D:\Server\Apache2\bin\Apache.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Ghost\GhostStartTrayApp.exe C:\Program Files\Lexmark X1100 Series\lxbkbmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia PC Suite 6\LaunchApplication.exe C:\Program Files\Lexmark X1100 Series\lxbkbmon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\PCSuite\DataLayer\DataLayer.exe C:\Program Files\GIANT Company Software\GIANT AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\FreeRamXpPro\FreeRAM XP Pro 1.40.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Uptime\Windows Uptime.exe C:\Program Files\Webroot\PopUpWasher\PopUpWasher.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\PCSuite\Services\SERVIC~1.EXE D:\Server\Apache2\bin\ApacheMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\BandwidthMeter\BandwidthMeter.exe C:\Program Files\BinarySense\HDDlife\HDDlife.exe C:\Program Files\No-IP\DUC20.exe C:\Program Files\Rainlendar\Rainlendar.exe C:\Program Files\GIANT Company Software\GIANT AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe D:\Apps\HijackThis.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe R0 - You can use MsConfig to disable those that you don't need actively running and also remove them from Start > Programs > Startup folder. The system is clean of any malware that I can see. Try closing down a lot of applications. Also go to MSConfig and uncheck all in Startup, then see if the system still doesn't shutdown, etc.
DjLizard
Yeh you must be a tweaker. Use MSCONFIG and disable everything on the Startup tab one by one until successful. It's going to take you quite a while. It's gotta be one of those junk programs you're running. FreeRAM XP Pro? wtf. Popupwasher? wtf. That's awesome (that's sarcasm) how F-Secure comes with Backweb, I mean wtf. Cursedbythegods
You only need a popup blocker when your surfing the web, if your getting it in any other place, you have adware installed. And, most browsers have built in popup blocking support, (Firefox, and if you have winxp sp2... internet explorer.)

Moderators Andavari Posted May 12, 2005 Moderators Share Posted May 12, 2005 I had a "similiar problem" approximately 90% of the time on my Dell Dimension 8300 system running WinXP Pro. My shutdown/restart problem would happen immediately after running a full antivirus scan using eTrust EZ Antivirus, or after the system was on a long period of time. I was able to turn off the system by holding the power button for about 6 to 8 seconds however that isn't necessarily a good thing since that may damage or corrupt files since it may be considered a bad shutdown. When I updated the system BIOS it completely disappeared.
