I didn't want to go off topic so thought i'd continue this in a new thread.

from the links to the MS info supplied therein, isn't Vista still supported, it's just out of the 5 year mainstream support and into the 5 year extended?

and i seem to remember XP was dropped a while back but there was some sort of ground swell and MS resurrected it for 1000 days or something. so maybe (if i'm right) some developers still think XP is now unsupported or they haven't heard the news or simply are working off the normal MS 10 year life cycle.

personally, i don't think there is a difference to us mortals.

but as far as MS is concerned, i think their logic would be mainstream = we better fix it lickity-split, extended = if enough people complain we'll get to it with the next SP.

speaking of SP's and seeing those notes in your link login123, i think that's the main reason we'll never see SP4 for XP (but i hope they do a SP2 for W7) as it means they have to extend support for a further 2 years.

No, probably no sp4 for xp. They might push out some sort of rollup, though.

No more SP's and no more rollup's for either XP nor Vista...while were on the subject there aparently will be no SP2 for Windows 7 either (who knows, hopefully we will get a rollup)

never knew MS thought that far ahead - i'm impressed.

as to SP's, I install enough PC's with XP that, personally, I would love SP4 for XP as it would save me getting those 130'ish updates everytime.

but i won't be too dissapointed and have resigned myself to whatever fate delivers.

would love SP2 for w7 though (for the same reason - there's going to be enough people wanting w7 reloaded for the next couple of years)

have you tried making an ISO with nLite? I have slipstreamed win xp sp3 sucessfully with it. Have not tried any other service packs nor hotfixes, but i understand you can include those too.

Am going to do so soon, will report back, but don't wait up. Everything takes 5 times longer than I planned these days.

i did try nlite, must be about 3 or so years ago. no, must be more, it was before Vista.

i got it to work but something happened, can't remember exactly what, but i ended up ditching it and just doing the 'slip streaming' manually everytime.

but you raise a good point, i should give it another crack, it must have had many iterations by now.

i'm sure that XP will definitely be around and well used by businesses way past the 500 day countdown.

it wouldn't surprise me if MS may just increase the support date cut-off.
