Hi all - hope someone can help. I've been working all day on a docx which I've saved regularly. Having completed the job (7 h work!) I saved it in Dropbox and then on my hard drive. While saving in the latter Word crashed.
The version in Dropbox is blank - 0 bytes. The version I've been saving on the drive all day has gone.
I ran Recuva but it didn't find anything. I tried following a link to a Microsoft site for advice, but the link won't load!
Have a sinking feeling about all this but if anyone has any bright ideas I'd be so grateful.
Thank you for the Microsoft link. I followed it and checked out all the suggestions. No luck, unfortunately. I also looked at the Sussex site, which didn't help either. In the course of working through the suggestions I discovered that 'always create backup' had become disabled - no idea how that had happened - I've been badly caught out! I always set the Autorecover to save every 5 minutes, and save manually as I go along as well.
Operating system: MS Windows
Office 2010
After the crash, Word reloaded with the option of saving the file. Unfortunately it was password protected, and entering the password seemed to have the effect of preventing the recovered file from loading - at any rate nothing happened.
have you tried using the Windows search function to find it?
also try replacing the first character of your filename with a ~ as this is the temporary file Word creates while you are in the document and it's left behind if Word terminates abnormally.
so, for example, search for MyPreciousDoc.docx and if that fails, look for ~yPreciousDoc.docx
Yes, I've searched for the filename using the search function, and also by using the ~ prefix. Nothing there.
I don't suppose it's relevant, but I'm using Microsoft Home & Student 2010. A few weeks ago an odd pop-up began appearing intermittently, with the heading 'click to run', stating 'An update for Microsoft Home & Student 2010 is now available online. Please remain connected to the internet for the duration of the update. Do you wish to start downloading the update now? [yes|no buttons]'. I haven't clicked 'yes' because it looks so dodgy - there's no hint it has come from Microsoft and I can't find anything about it on the Microsoft site. If it is genuine, then maybe my file has been affected by a bug that the update would have prevented?
