Wiping out other files?

:mellow:I am wondering if the cleaner can wipe out the wrong files? I have had 2 different computers and with the first one HP I had things like the HP Organize fail and eventually stop working all together. Other programs failed and I had serious problems. I argued with hp for a year and eventually they gave me a new computer because that one would not even burn a back up disk. Now I have a compaq pressario. I feel that they gave me a cheaper version of what I had. Now 2 months later guess what same type of problems. Only difference is not as many programs failing. compaq organize has disappeared all together. I have several different spyware programs and I do use the ccleaner. I have checked my computer for viruses and it finds nothing. Of course I know nothing is 100% fool proof but I dont download much and I dont even download music. So I am back to what hp claimed with the other computer. That the crap cleaner was destroying my programs. Is this holding any water? Can the ccleaner destroy files like that? Or other programs that I dont use too often?

Hello, and welcome to the CC Forum!

If CCleaner would be doing such a thing, that would be a serious issue.

Could you give a little background, e.g.

  • Windows version?
  • File system (FAT32 or NTFS)?
  • CCleaner version?
  • And most importantly, what do you do with CCleaner - there are many functions.

windows xp, file system?, v1.30.310,(the version on this computer) I only use the cleaner and the issues I am not that advanced with using it. And I dont use it very often.

Two more questions

  • Did you download the winapp2.ini file? (If you don't know what that is, then you probably didn't).
  • What applications have you listed under the Applications tab?

Sorry, one more

  • Under Options, Settings, what do you have at the bottom (Secure detletion)?

I definately dont know what winapp2.ini on my old computer I had to download a file to be able to go online with talkamerica, on this computer I have not had to download anything like that. Applications tab? Everything is checked except saved information. I left it where it was when I downloaded it. under options settings it says secure deletions normal file deletions(faster) is checked. I feel like an idiot with this sometimes, and have no idea why a file like compaq organize would disappear. Thanks for your help.

Last question: did you run the 'Issues' cleaner (second box from left top)?

If you did not, and with all the answers you have given before, I think it is impossible for CCleaner to do such a damage. Why do I say this: because I have all these settings that you have; I don't use the Issues (registry) cleaner, and I have run CCleaner for about 2 years every day, and nothing on my computer has disappeared.

I also don't think anybody else here has seen applications disappearing with the use of CCleaner. CCleaner removes temporary files of any kind, but never applications, or files that are essential for these applications to run.

Do you have anti-virus software installed?

Do you have anti-spyware installed?

Do you have a firewall installed?

In my experience it is far more likely that some kind of malware is causing applications from running correctly.

It has also been my experience over the years that the easiest way to recover from any kind of 'lost' files is from regular full file system backups.

Hello lisa

It may be an idea to check where the Organize program keeps the things that you drag and drop into it. It may be that it uses temp folders which as you know ccleaner cleans out.

It may also be worthwhile to post a hijackthis log in our forum to check for anything that shouldn't be there.

Advice on how to do this is here

http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1720

Yes I have ran the issues a couple of times because I find when I try to get rid of something like norton or even msn they are stubborn to get rid of and the issues usually takes care of it. I have never seen any compaq organize in the issues box when I have run it. Which was only 2 times.
