Possibly coincidental with me installing CCleaner v.2.20.920 and Click&Clean 3.1 today, my Windows Updates icon disappeared from my system tray and I can't find anyway of updating my system, which I am spring cleaning.
Even connecting to the Windows Update site seems to result in a "server not available for this page" error.
is this a known issue with CCleaner or Click&Clean 3.1 please?
For XP try Start -> Run and type "wupdmgr.exe" (without the quotation marks). It should start Windows Update.
Is it possible a procedure you have ran has hidden the icon? Perhaps right click the system tray, Properties and check to see if Hide Inactive Icons is clicked. If so click on Customize and make an adjustment as necessary to show the relevant icon.
I have never heard of ccleaner taking out windows updates.
We have no control over Click&Clean as it is not supplied by Piriform.
Was there a reason for your spring clean?
Are all your virus/malware apps fully updated and have been run lately?
Yes, fully virus protected. The spring clean was because the PC has had some problems lately -- corrupted graphics card has been replaced, the machine physically cleaned and extra RAM put in, but still running very slow... my fault, because for much too long I haven't cleaned up all the crud lately that ccleaner deals with.

Thanks Robbie, I have run that command and -- like Ishan_Rulz's link, it brought up the Windows Update website. In both cases this showed me a ghraphic telling me that "Automatic Updates: Turned ON." and "Your computer is set to receive notifications when new updates are available. "
But y system tray doesn't show me the icon to allow me to manually get updates, which is what I want.
I don't have Windows Update set to Automatic Update so when I run that command I get the manual update screen in Internet Explorer. Have you tried turning off Windows Update to run automatically in Control Panel - it should be in Security Centre if I recall correctly, I'm now on my Vista laptop so I haven't got access to XP (and perhaps then running that command again to see if it then works) and then afterwards turning Windows Updates back on to automatic.
Umm, I've forgotten the way to do it, as I use Vista now.
But probably.. There are no important updates available as of now?
And you mean the notification area, don't you? (Right corner of the Taskbar)
Go to Control Panel > Automatic Updates > There will be options about notifications. IMHO this was the problem?
The icon is only displayed, if there are updates available
Hi Ishan, yes I am referring to the bottom right hand corner showing on the task bar -- I thought this was called the system tray. The Windows Updates icon WAS showing, then suddenly disappeared. At the time, there WERE important updates waiting to be installed, which I subsequently have installed.
I will however now wait for a week or so to see if the icon reappears when new updates are ready... it is of course always possible I am just being completely stupid about this and that the icon disappeared AFTER I started the update process... I don't think so, though.
