What to check in Advanced Settings

Fairly new to CCleaner and this is my first posting. I cannot find adequate help for using the Advance Settings. I want to enlarge the cleaning area. Also, how can I ask CCleaner to clean my external hard drive that is connected to my tower? I am having so luck using this software, but want to make sure I'm getting the most out of it. :)

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim, and welcome to the forum.

Here's a detailed description of the "Advanced" items in the "Windows" section of CCleaner ...

You'll see most of them are related to user choice settings within Windows, except for a couple of them including the "Custom Files And Folders" box, which brings us to your question about an external drive.

CCleaner is hard wired to address default locations on your System Drive, usually C. If you want to clean locations on an external drive, you would have to do this by setting up CCleaner "Includes", and for any "Includes" to run you need to check the "Custom Files And Folders" box ...

If your external drive contains an Operating System, it can't be directed to clean that drive as it would your System Drive.

If you can clarify what sort of cleaning you would need to do on that external drive maybe we can advise better.

The help file I've linked you to above is of course quite detailed for all CCleaners features.

If you have many things moved around, you may wish to use symbolic links. Many keep things like Steam (just an example) in alternate locations from the default, but CCleaner will handle it properly if you make a symlink.

The format for this is running the command

mklink /d "Original Path" "New Path"
