What Happened?!

After using CCleaner for the first time (using all the basic default settings) then shutting down, my PC wouldn't reboot. It would get as far as the initial Windows XP screen and then flicker back to the Compaq logo. I tried more tricks than a Bombay hooker but couldn't get Windows up to be able to use the Restore feature.

After a few hours I gave up and am slow formating that hard drive for a new install of everything. I don't really enjoy that option but when you think about it a format and new OS install is the ultimate cleaning. I'd like to give CCleaner another chance on that PC if I could be sure that this wouldn't happen again.

Amen, Brian. After installing version 2.09.600 and then cleaning my system with it.....on the next restart I was unable to boot into Windows, and was greeted with the lovely Blue Screen Of Death. The error said BAD_POOL_HEADER. It wouldn't even boot into Safe Mode.

I had to restore my system to it's original state as it shipped from Dell, and am now in the tedious process of re-installing all my programs and tweaks. The only other thing that could be involved.....the last thing I did before rebooting was to use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall an old Cisco VPN Client that we haven't used in over a year. That could be the culprit, too.

But until I get some feedback here, I'll be going back to v2.03.532 which was the last version I had installed prior to v2.09.600.

Any thoughts?

Robert

No problem after running the latest version under Vista SP1. Also did registry cleaning prior to rebooting. Did either of you install any new software or hardware durring the last working session? Aside from CC.

ThirdRail I did a search for that error and found an interesting page. If you use WiFi it might be worth a read: http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=514 Other pages I looked at referenced corrupt or missing drivers.

Brian960 the automatic reboot is actually a feature in Windows (enabled by default). Since you've already begun the format its almost impossible to say what the error could have been. Your memory of the days events is all we have to work with.

I'd like to give CCleaner another chance on that PC if I could be sure that this wouldn't happen again.

Thanks for taking your time to make a report.:)

No issues here under Vista Business SP1. I Installed the slim build in about 3 secs and run both file and registry clean.

One more good question to ask is if any other 3rd party registry cleaner or repair has been used :)

I downloaded the latest version yesterday, and I've ran it over and over with Cleaning and Registry Issues with no problems at all.

Just thought I'd mention this as a balance.

Davey,

Thanks for the questionaire and concern. See my answers below.

Hi Guys,

We need your help also.

The following info will help others to come up with a solution.

These answers help to evaluate the problem.

Just fill in the answers next to or below the questions?

Did you reboot after installing CCleaner before trying to run it?

As I recall, no. The installation procedure does not request or demand a reboot.

Did you do any Registry issues fixing?

I probably did. My normal habit is to fix the Registry issues after deleting all the crap files.

Do you continue to scan for issues until no more are found?

Yes, I always do that.

Did you do any software or hardware changes installs or uninstalls?

Yes. As I stated earlier, I uninstalled a Cisco VPN Client software program using Add/Remove Programs. No other software or hardware changes were made.

Are you running with Administrator privileges.

Yes.

CCleaner version?

v2.08.588 (I erred in my earlier post, saying it was v2.09.600)

What Language did you request, if any, at install?

US English

OS,edition ,32bit or 64bit and version?

Windows XP Home SP2, 32 bit, fully patched.

Browsers and ver.?

IE 7.0 fully patched.

Security software and ver?

Norton Internet Security 2006, all current updates.

Other data you think might be relevant?

Addressing PiCo's post: No other 3rd party registry utilities used. No need to. CCleaner has always done a great job for me.

Addressing Disk4mat's point: No WiFi in use on my system.

What did you do and then what happened?

Downloaded and installed v2.08.588 and then ran it to clean my system. Then uninstalled the Cisco VPN Client. On next reboot, system would not boot into Windows, even in Safe Mode. BSOD error said BAD_POOL_HEADER.

Provide a list of your CCleaner.ini file.( Tick option for Save settings to INI file at Options > Advanced then close CCleaner. This file will be created in C:\Program Files\CCleaner folder.)

I can't do that, because a System Recovery has been performed. However, I removed the hard drive and put it in an external USB enclosure and copied all the files to ANOTHER external drive before reinstalling the hard drive and performing the recovery. So...I do have the winapp.ini, winreg.ini, and winsys.ini files from the then-current C:\Program Files\CCleaner directory. I could post those if it would help.

Are you using a winapp2.ini file?

Answer "Yes" if you do and please explain its contents or provide a brief listing.Otherwise answer "No".

No such file exists on my system.

Best wishes,

:) davey

Thanks for the feedback guys. I finally have my PC restored --minus a few items that weren't backed up. Not one to be deterred by disaster, I reinstalled CCleaner and turned it loose on the new setup... and it worked perfectly.

Don't know what happened the first time but judging from the overwhelming positive feedback for CCleaner on the site I figured it had to be a fluke. As much as I hated to reinstall everything (especially all the Windows updates) I think it was the quicker fix for me.

Any software site that has a helpful forum has got to have a good product line.
