uTorrent v3.1.3(build 27120) released.
Older, much older versions were better in my opinion.
I kinda agree, too much extra stuff in the new versions (apps, feeds etc), which I don't use at all.
They should make a "lite" version of uTorrent without those features.
And for the unwary, uTorrent carries "Open Candy", which has been the subject of discussions for quite some time.
Make your own mind up about it, but you do not get the option to opt out of installing it, and the only mention is to be found right at the end of the "Terms and Conditions" ...
Which is why you should always glance through "Terms and Conditions" before pressing the "Go" button with any new software.
This isn't a criticism of your thread in any way nodles, just some extra information about the install. If you go back a few versions, you can get uTorrent without the passenger.
And for the unwary, uTorrent carries "Open Candy", ... you can get uTorrent without the passenger.
Should we call it a passenger or a hijacker
Are you sure? Couldn't find anything related to OpenCandy on my system.
I can't stand the direction they've taken uTorrent since v3, it's just bloated and loosing the original reason that most people used it- it was like 512kb!

True.

Did you use a Portable Variant ?
I am happy with CrystalDiscInfo.
Last week this was heavily attacked on another forum because it was claimed it installed OpenCandy
I had never seen it offered and I did not think it sneaked through either.
I searched for the stated executable and it was absent.
Then I searched for CrystalDiskInfo which took me to
http://crystalmark.i...fo/index-e.html
I never take the first download offer until I seek a portable variant, bingo
http://crystalmark.i...ad/index-e.html
The second item down is the Portable I obviously would have downloaded,
and immediately above is the Installer version link and by the side is an OpenCandy link.
CrystalDiskInfo is perfectly transparent about the availability of OpenCandy when using the Installer flavour,
and do NOT include it in the Portable build.
CCleaner includes the possibility of an extra addon with the installer,
but exclude it from both Portable and Slim
Perhaps you struck lucky and happened to download a variant without OpenCandy.
I just had a sneaky thought :-
Could an OpenCandy Dissident have modified the latest uTorrent to strip out OpenCandy,
and then used uTorrent to distribute his improved version
I'm absolutely sure, although since the last time I checked out an installation containing Open Candy, they've changed things.
Originally, a file called "OCSetupHlp.dll" was installed into the temp folder, did it's business, and was then deleted along with the other software temp installation files (uTorrent in this case).
It still does the same thing, but the file is now called "BunndleOfferManager.dll", is still installed to the temp folder along with a "Buundle" temp folder containing a log file, and is still deleted.
The issue here is that this stuff is installed and runs on your computer without your knowledge. and carries out quite a bit of activity before it's demise. If Open Candy had nothing to hide, you would get an opt-out choice during the install, as you do with the heap of other rubbish uTorrent offers you.
As it is, you have no idea about this unwanted passenger unless you spot the Open Candy Terms in the licence agreement.
This is what it installs, and I'll list the contents of the log file and the dll.

And there are registry entries created such as this one example ...
The full details of the uTorrent installation are to be found here ...
http://www.threatexp...045c7371d2ed8ae
In my humble opinion, there is absolutely no reason why this process has to take place without the knowledge of the user.
No matter how many times Open Candy screech to the heavens that what they do is provide a service, this secretive way of insinuating themselves into computers without the owners knowledge says enough for me.
But of course, make your own minds up, as I have. I'm just providing you with the information.
EDIT:
If it wasn't for the "Open Candy" section of the agreement, you would have no idea that this was Open Candy.
I don't think you'll find a mention of that name anywhere else, and it's too much of a coincidence for me to have this "BunndleOfferManager.dll" appearing in the same location, doing the same thing, and appearing during a software install, as the "OCSetupHlp.dll" previously did.
Just for info, I checked this out under "Returnil" to make sure on reboot that I completely clear everything it did.
EDIT 2:
The newly created "Bunndle" registry entries aren't deleted. They still retain details of software update checks etc..
I found only some registry entries considering "Bunndle", but nothing else and no files.
And for the unwary, uTorrent carries "Open Candy", which has been the subject of discussions for quite some time.
Open Candy is beyond easy to bypass which is why I'll use some software that has it packed in since I'll never see it pop up!
My now ancient version uTorrent 2.2.1 doesn't have any "Candy", "Open" or otherwise, and also doesn't do any funny business in the background which made me completely distrust newer blinged up versions with all that extra stuff in them like apps, etc.
Could an OpenCandy Dissident have modified the latest uTorrent to strip out OpenCandy,
and then used uTorrent to distribute his improved version
All anyone needs is just uTorrent.exe, well in the past with older versions it was a standalone program that would/could copy itself into program files.
Edit:
Although that Bunndle junk may get into the registry they can be blocked as a restricted site and cookie in IE, and in the HOSTS file.
IE Format:
bunndle.com services.bunndle.com www.bunndle.com
HOSTS Format:
127.0.0.1 bunndle.com 127.0.0.1 services.bunndle.com 127.0.0.1 www.bunndle.com
I have information for you guys, regarding the OpenCandy entry in the uTorrent ULA, and the inclusion of the "Bunndle" passenger contained within the uTorrent installation.
I've received information via pm that "Bunndle" is in fact a competitor of OpenCandy, and has no connection with Open Candy whatsoever.
The easiest way to do this is to copy and paste the relevant information directly from the pm, with a copy of my reply.
Bunndle (http://www.bunndle.com/) is a "competitor" of OpenCandy which uTorrent has chosen to work -- they used to work with us. OpenCandy is still automatically removed once the recommendation and installation process has been completed, and OpenCandy does NOT create registry entries (we haven't for over a year), and we require that the OpenCandy EULA is disclosed within a partner's install (and we spot-check partners to ensure compliance).
Btw, we still use OCSetupHlp.dll.
Please let me know if you have any questions! :-)
Thanks!
Andrew (fka Doc Dr. Apps)
Policy, Compliance & Integration Team at OpenCandy
Hi Andrew.
If what you say is the case, and I have no reason to believe otherwise, then I would suggest (although I probably don't need to), that you have the uTorrent developers remove the OpenCandy section from their ULA.
That entry, coupled with the fact that Bunndle doesn't have a mention in said ULA, will probably lead others to the same conclusion it led me, that the extra installation feature is in fact OpenCandy in another guise.
I will of course amend my information in that thread, probably by copying and pasting the gist of your pm to me, with my reply to you.
Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Dennis.
I think that covers it really, and it surprises me that uTorrent are providing this passenger (I'll stick with the term), and are doing so without even a mention of them in any part of the installation, in particular the ULA.
Again, make your own minds up about uTorrent and it's installation.
I also agree that newer uTorrent v3 versions suck for the reasons stated before.
uTorrent v3.1.3 (build 27237) released. Links in the first post.
