Uninstall other software?

For months I've been trying to uninstall some huge game software my kids loaded on the computer but something is screwy with the install/uninstall feature of my Windows XP home edition. When I try to use the add/remove feature it either changes over to Install mode when I'm trying to uninstall or it says it finished running maintenance on the program. I was hugely disappointed then when I tried the Tools option of CCleaner and found that it just tries to do it with the same Add/Remove program feature of Windows XP so I get the same problems. I can't reinstall the software and then try uninstall because the original software CDs are long gone. Is there any way to do this within CCleaner or if someone can suggest something else I'd really appreciate it.

If the installers were originally made with Microsoft Windows Installer the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility may be useful.

Note: It may be wise to make a System Restore point first, so as to not get into even more extra trouble than what you originally began with.

That won't uninstall the programs though will it. Perhaps Revo Uninstaller would be worth trying?:

With that it tries to uninstall the program normally then scans afterwards for leftovers and gives you the option to delete them, may work but as Andavari said, make a restore point first in case it causes any problems (I've never used it with a problem like this but worth a try IMO)

If not you'll have to remove all the game folders manually and run a search for anything related to the games titles and delete (do this last step anyway just in case anything's left behind). May have to use the Windows Installer cleanup after that.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give it a try and do a restore point first.
