I noticed when I tried to restore my registry, I was unable to. I right clicked on the file, and the word merge never came up. I tried this several times. I use to be able to restore the registry but as of late I cannot.
I'm not sure if this should be tacked on to this trread or not but since it is on the same topic....
I am also having a problem with the merge function. When I right click on the registry backup file, there is no merge option even though the file type is .reg. The Properties tab shows it to be registry entries and that it opens with note pad. When I click on change to select something other than notepad, I don.t see anything in the pick list that seems appropriate. To What program should I change the opens with. I am using windows xp with all updates and the latest version of CCleaner. The registry backup file is located in 'my documents' folder and the latest one is named cc_20071116_1003.reg I have never had to merge one yet but I was checking out the restore procedure when I found there was no merge option on the right click. Any help is appreciated since I am reluctant to use CCleaner's registry function until I know I can restore.
Hi Larry, as I said before, try double-clicking the file; do you get a prompt?
The absence of a 'merge' context menu entry doesn't necessarily mean your reg file association is toast.
Tony,
Sorry, I forgot to mention it but I did try the double right click but I get the same results as a single right click. A single or double left click brings the file up in notepad. All the properties seem to identify it as a 'register entries' file. I have not tried the import function in reg editor since I am only checking out the merge procedure. To be candid, my knees get a little weak when I think of messing around with the reg editor.
In that case you do need to repair the file assocation for regfiles. Download the regfile association fix on the web page Hazelnut linked to in her reply.
It's a zip file; unzip so you'll end up with the xp_regfile.reg file inside.
Fire up the Registry editor: Start > Run > Regedit.
Go to the File Menu > Import, then browse to the xp_regfile.reg you just extracted, and press 'open'. Do you get a prompt that the information has been successfully entered in the registry?
If so, try double-clicking the CCleaner regfile once again. You should now get a prompt.
Incidentally, the 'merge' option *might* still be missing, but double-clicking ought to work now. If necessary, we can add the 'merge' option afterwards
If you do this as explained, there's nothing to fear; all you're doing is restoring the default Windows value data .
