Unable to enable startup item

I have been trying to find an answer to a problem with ccleaner ver 3.07.1457(64-

bit) on my HP 64bit laptop with vista 64bit SP2. I always run Ccleaner as "Administrator" in my

laptop. I have also installed the Ccenhancer ver 2.3.0.0. I use it all the time and

have no problems with the basic functions however I have also used the

tools>startup feature and have had problems with the "enable" option once I have

"disabled" a startup item.

I can enable any item that I have previously disabled using this feature if it is in

any folder other then the "C:\Program Files (x86)" folder however when I try to enable

an item in that folder I get the ccleaner error message "failed to enable/disable startup

item: The system cannot find the file specified".

I assumed at first that this was due to "permissions" so I gave "full control" to

the "C:\Program Files (x86)" folder and all it's subfolders. I checked this with

the "sysinternals" program "AccessEnum" and as best as I can tell all the files and

folders have "full control" for both "Administrator" and "User", though I always run

CCleaner as "Administrator". This however did not change a thing. I adding in the

environmental variables for vista the Path "C:\Program Files (x86)" and this too did

not change a thing.

I would like some answer to this for I really like CCleaner and have used the

"enable/disable" startup feature on several computers not realizing that I could not

enable the item once it was disabled. One of the items I disabled I was able to reenable using Msconfig.

Helps if you also state which version of Windows you're using, such as: XP, Vista, 7

You can also try Start->Run and type in MSCONFIG to manage startup items.

I am using Vista sp2 64 bit on a HP laptop as I noted in my post. I was able to use Msconfig to enable one of the items I disabled however I still would like Ccleaner to be able to do this for I am not sure that every item that I disabled in Ccleaner will appear in Msconfig.

Perhaps permission for "C:\Program Files (x86)" are irrelevant.

Maybe you need authority over the relevant registry key

CCleaner shows I have 8 items in "C:\Program Files (x86)",

but one seems to be controlled via HKCU:Run,

and the other 7 by HKLM:Run.

I have checked the HKLM:run key and it allows full control for administrator and user of that key. I have also given, I believe, full control to administrator for all folders in "c:\Program Files (x86)" yet I still get the ccleaner error message "failed to enable/disable startup item:

Do you have full control over this key or an x32 compatible equivalent :-

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I have a free tool RegSeeker from Nirsoft which is very good, I suggest you get it.

I have disabled startup of an executable named smax4pnp.exe

Regseeker could not find it in the registry.

I told CCleaner Tools Startup to enable it and it changed NO to YES

Then Regseeker found it in the registry at the above location.

A Nirsoft option took me to the key in RegEdit and I deleted the appropriate value in that key,

because I have authority to both write and delete there.

I immediately looked at CCleaner and no change appeared because there is no inefficient continuous live updating,

but when I switched from Startup to Uninstall and back to Startup the key status had changed again to NO.

The other thing to watch for are quotations around paths that have embedded spaces.

I find some of my entries have them and some do not.

Sometimes they are redundant and sometimes essential - something else I worry about when I have nothing else to do ! ! !

For the moment, please use CCleaner 32-bit version when enabling these types of items.

OOPS, sorry, my bad.

I do not like admitting to be lazy but I am still using 64 bit CCleaner v3.05,

which might be why I do not have the same problem as the O.P.

My excuse is that I suffered the trauma of a little sub-set of 2000 locked registry keys which prevented me updating a software firewall.

At the time I had only just graduated from a nice friendly pre-XP Windows that still used INI files.

Ever since then I always expect grief from unexpected registry lockouts.

I have now developed the skills to take out any group that gets in my way.

I am very very happy with CCleaner. You people make excellent software. This small problem does not mean that much though it is nice to see that you people are on top of it. I conjecture that this problem has something to do with the parenthesis "(x86)". I do not know why MS has to change this for those caricatures where forbidden in DOS. I think such changes are pointless but MS seems to enjoy them and I don't know enough to argue the point nor do the users have the power to change what Ms wishes to do. I would like to know why Microsoft did it believing that it might be something other then perversity.

I used this advice (from above) and the problem of not being able to disable items was resolved:

You can also try Start->Run and type in MSCONFIG to manage startup items.

I'm using Version 4.07.4369 (84-bit)
