Ubuntu 12.10

Anyone else playing with the new Ubuntu release?

I have to say that its pretty good. This is the first Ubuntu release that just worked on my laptop. I cannot stand the new Unity interface so I installed the Mate Desktop Environment which is basically Gnome 2. I can't understand how they went from something so simple and clean to the mess that is Unity. I'm going to play around with this for a little while, may even keep using it on this system if no problems arise.

I've always liked this interface. Glad someone is keeping it alive.

It definitely looks "old school" compared to windows 7, Mac, and now Unity. But its also one of the easiest to navigate.

unity is horrible, I've only recently heard of mate but a eager to try it

I'm pretty impressed with mate. It works exactly like the old Gnome 2 Ubuntu did, but installing it on top of 12.10 gives you an updated driver base. I will probably wipe this and try Linux mint when they update. They usually do a good job with their customization. Linux mint 13 mate was a good OS, it just didn't play nice with any of my computers.

Ubuntu/Linux Mint/ReactOS only continue to get better. And they have Kernel EX for Windows 98/ME.

Boy, the future sounds exciting, & I'm not talking about 8 being great, either!

:)

And they have Kernel EX for Windows 98/ME.

¿QUE?

¿QUE?

Open Source compatibility layer with the aim of allowing XP/2000 only programs to run in 98/ME -> http://sourceforge.net/projects/kernelex/

and it's in ubuntu/mint/react? So I don't need WINE anymore?

Not sure on that. I mentioned it, because Ubuntu/Mint are good alternatives if future versions of Windows get too wonky, & from what I heard, Kernel EX adds support for theming Windows ME with XP visual style, etc, along with running XP programs, using XP icons, & perhaps stability fixes.

For an older PC, could breathe new life into them, allowing me to easily run DOS games that flail on XP & higher like dead fish.

Would be cool to see it ported to Ubuntu. Not that someone may not have already, but I am unaware if they do that at the moment.

P.S. Forget where, also saw a Windows 7 theme for Ubuntu sometime months back. Making it "easier to switch", where they attempted to have W7 wallpaper, start menu, etc.

Wasn't totally perfect because of some things, but I thought it was an awesome move in the right direction.
