'Timeout period has expired' - again!

I know timeout has been mentioned before BUT after getting a list of recoverable photos (all preceeded by a green circle, shown as not deleted and no overwritten sectors detected) from an external maxtor 279 gb drive, I have tried to recover a single 337kb photo but get the 'semaphore timeout period has expired!! Have tried disabling firewall and anti spyware which didn't make any difference and I see that Microsoft suggest running disk clean up. I'm not a techie and, as the external drive appears to be failing as I can't access it direct, I am loathe to try and run a disk clean up in case the drive deteriorates further.

The deep scan I ran listed 37k files (not all photos) and there are probably in total about 2k of photos that I would like to retrieve.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that would help me actually restore some of my photos and, should I find a solution in the meantime, I will post back.

Best regards - Nettleton
