This is probably the stupidest question of my

life but here goes! I was just thinking, can cleaning your hard drive all the time wear it out? I mean I know it is totally obsessive behavior, however, I run CC after every session.

Hey Slowday,

There are no stupid questions........unless you're blonde. :)

Running CC or any other clean-up software will cause no more wear than the normal use of the computer. I believe the expected service life of a harddrive is 5 years or 20,000 hours. A voltage surge, excessive heat, or a hard jolt to the tower or desk are more likely to kill the HDD before it wears out.

If you move, copy, create, delete files very often your disk partition will get more fragmented which result in it becomes slower.

Then you need to defragment your disk partition.

In the past according to the makers of VoptXP a commercial disk defrag program a fragmented hard disk will wear out faster than a defragmented hard disk, although it seems as though they've removed that information from their website, so who knows. Then there's the folks that say defragmenting everyday will wear out the hard disk. I defrag each and everyday and have done so since 1998 and haven't had any hard disk failures doing so.

Every day?

heh, thats crazy...

once a month is enough...

Heck I tend to defrag a few times a week. Twice usually. One a week average.

Fragmentation depends upon what you're doing on your system. Since I typically deal with large files that are several hundreds of MB in size defragging everyday negates long defrag times that a once per week method would cause in my situation.
