System Restore files are being deleted

Hello fellow ccleaner users,

I have just re-installed my pc and ofcourse 1 of programs to be installed first was ccleaner. After everything was done i made myself a system restore point. I ran ccleaner and guess what my restore points are gone. I read some topics here but they weren't really about ccleaner but more about other programs such as system mechanic.

I do not have such programs, nothing to clean my pc with, just ccleaner. When i am not running the program all restore points keep existing, but after the run they are all gone. I tried to exclude the Volume map on C:\ but that didn't work... i even excluded the whole C:\ but that didn't do the trick either.

Can anyone help me get rid of this problem? because it seems to be happening on an other pc aswell.

Problem:

Edit I have the following configuration:

- win xp professional sp3

- ccleaner's latest version

- I ran the cleaner NOT registry

- I tried several checkmarks but not the ones under: internet explorer, firefox, windows explorer and multi media

- everything that is checked is standard. when you download ccleaner i kept all the checkmarks as they were and still are.

- The map called "system volume information" is used for thesystem restore points. so i manually added that map to be excluded when i run ccleaner. that did not work, so i tried the most dramatic thing to exclude the whole C:\ again manually in ccleaner. So even with the checkmarks the system restore points shouldn't have been deleted, because i know winxp saves them on the C:\ drive.

Edit

- I created restore points with the system restore option, so i did not use ccleaner for it.

- I start up ccleaner and check if they are created using ccleaner -- yes i can find them smile.gif

then i run the cleaner and gone sad.gif all the restore files are no where to be seen

Problem solved for me

- system restore points are being deleted when i empty my recycler on the desktop --> reason Unknown

- the checkmark for the "empty recycler" in ccleaner was marked so i unchecked it. --> Ccleaner is not the one deleting the system restore points!!

did you just run cleaner? or did you run registry integ?

What is checked on in the section that you ran?

Could you create a restore point and go one by one with the checkmarks until the point deletes?

All of these questions need to be answered for bug fix (if there is one)

There's no option to check or uncheck for deleting sys restore points, CC doesn't do this (well, not intentionally).

Are you using CC to look at the restore points you created? Do you see them when you create them?

Can you see any restore points when you look at them using System Restore?

When using CC to look at restore points, have all the restore points gone or do you see the latest?

yes i know CC doesn't do it intentionally thats the reason why i report this, its a good program :)

again i have to say, no i cannot. All system restore points are gone: when i look in ccleaner and when i look at the normal system restore.

Plan B, Google. "No restore points" xp turns up 18,000 hits, and a quick look shows stuff like 'try disabling it, restart, then enable it, that usually does the trick,' and this 'The problem with System Restore is that it's a miserably designed application, one that could only be produced by a company with no competition in the marketplace. You need to periodically check up on it because it both breaks and turns itself off and in neither case does Windows XP tell you that anything is wrong.'

After that this entry from M/S http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;302796 brings up the usual check list. There are other reasons, mostly conflict with other software. If the turn sys restore off/on doesn't work then I can only suggest a Google trawl.

Plan B, Google. "No restore points" turns up 21,000 hits, and a quick look shows stuff like 'There have also been reports of System Restore being turned ON but there being no restore points. The solution: turn System Restore off and then back on. Its as if the system does know that System Restore should be on.'

After that this (rather old) entry http://help.lockergnome.com/windows2/Resto...pict435757.html brings up quite a few reasons, mostly conflict with other software. If the turn sys restore off/on doesn't work then I can only suggest a Google trawl.

thank you for that information. i will do what you suggest, but when i last used ccleaner yesterday and made restore points afterwards, they work fine: restarted pc many times and they are still visible in ccleaner and in system restore.

I will try to turn it off and on again though to rule that out aswell.

Edit - i turned systemrestore off and on again. i made a restore point with the name: stabiele pc and looked at both ccleaner and system restore to see if it was made and they both showed the point i made.

- Restarted pc and the point is still there again both showed the point.

- Ran Ccleaner and the points are all gone. So it must be ccleaner that unintenionally removes the points :(

There are so many variables here that you will just have to plug away at them. Enough partition space, running any disk wipe stuff, other a/v, firewall s/w, any Norton stuff, any malware, etc. I have no definitive answer.

the thing that i can give you at this point are the following and i will edit this reply. after that i will edit the text at the top.

diskspace free where winxp is installed (this is a partition) of a total disk space of 1 Tb:

C:\ 48Gb free diskspace

- I do not have any other programs, like i said i just re-installed my pc, but i will give you a list of the programs that i installed (before the reinstallation i had this problem aswell):

windows live messenger (newest version)

Razer applications (drivers and their programs - used for gaming)

Nvidia newest version

Pc probe II (didn't have the program before reinstallation, but before re-install i had the same problem )

Winamp & realplayer

Logitech (webcam)

Stardock - Impulse (program to buy games, download and install them)

Mozilla Firefox

thats it no other programs. and no not even an anti virus or firewall. (i ordered nod32 anti virus which will arrive today or tomorrow)

- system restore config uses 12% of the diskspace required.

i seem to have found the problem. I read that other topic you sent me and Mr.T said to uncheck every mark and go through it untill the system restore points are deleted.

Well i found out that the "empty dustbin" is the problem (i am dutch so i hope the translation is correct)

How is it possible that that's the problem :S its the last thing i would uncheck !!

the problem with ccleaner is almost solved.

Ccleaner is not the one responsible for the deletion of the system restore points.

when i created a restore point - didn't use ccleaner - and added a 1kb file to the "bin" and emptied it the restore points are gone aswell.

now i disabled the "bin" and ran ccleaner with a checkmark "empty bin" or the one that empties it.

ccleaner still empties that "bin" so they are still removed. maybe add something to ccleaner that recognizes that the "bin" isn't used when you uncheck the mark ( to directly remove deleted files from your pc) and tht ccleaner automaticly unchecks the mark ?mpty dustbin" in ccleaner.

I'm pleased you have made some progress. As far as I know this 'empty recycler' problem has been found by a few people, and I don't think there's a solution to it yet. I don't even know if the developers can reproduce the problem: it's really up to them now.

Yes i agree, for me i will look for other things why the recycler removes those files. If i find out what it is, i will post it here.
