I've recently bought an AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor with 232 GB of hard-drive capacity and 187 GB of free space (whatever that means). I've just discovered that system restore doesn't seem to work in my Vista Home Premium edition. A couple of weeks ago I was able to restore my computer without problems but yesterday a program I was trialing didn't uninstall properly so I resorted to system restore again. To my surprise, I couldn't get past the "Please wait while your windows files and settings are being restored. System restore is initializing" screen. This screen:
After waiting for a couple of hours, I reset my computer and tried to restore from safe mode with the same results. I disabled my antivirus protection (I use McAfee virus scan plus) and chose another restoration point but same results again. I've tried different restoration points, none of them seem to work.
Does anybody know how to solve this? System restore is a very useful feature, I wouldn't like to do without it.
(Please, don't be too technical in your explanations, I don't know much about computers)
From a search of the web, booting into safe mode then doing the restore seems to work: Try this:
1. Start in safe mode (press F8 on boot-up)
2. Once logged on, use command prompt to run restore - as the option isnt available in safe mode - type rstrui.exe - this will then run system restore and you can choose your restore point.

I read all your links and tried what they suggested, and windows restore still didn't work. In the end, considering that my computer is new and there are not many things accumulated yet, I decided to make a clean re-install. Now everything is working again, but I've grown terribly suspicious of Vista if system restore breaks down so easily. I never had a problem with system restore in XP. Maybe you can recommend some good software that I can use instead of system restore. I used Paragon drive Backup in my old computer, but I never had the need to resort to it, windows XP system restore always did the trick.
