Background:
Adobe Reader Search Index files are great when you are searching within one main pdf that linked to hundreds or thousands of other pdf files. Advanced PDF creators use these indexes (autoindex files) all the time to improve search speed this way. Unfortunately Adobe Reader (at least versions 8 & 9) have a very bad habit of keeping the links to the Advanced Search Indexes - seemingly forever. If the Index Files are moved or if dozens of Index files are referenced, Adobe Reader seems to keep loading (or attempting to load) each and every Search Index in the list. I've seen 10 minute wait times to main PDF files if the index files are large, there are many in the list to search for, or they simply no longer exist. If one deletes these Search Index links, all performance issues go away immediately.
Current Solution:
It's currently a tedious, manual process if one wishes to clean up their Adobe Reader Advanced Search Index Files (in my environment, sometimes there are 40 index file links). Here's the process;
1. Open Adobe Reader. (Don't open any PDF, just the reader alone.)
2. Click "Edit", "Search".
3. Click "Use Advanced Search Options"
4. Change the "Look In:" selector from Current PDF to "Select Index".
5. From the "Index Selection" window that appears, select an Index Title, then click the "Remove" button. Repeat this step until all Index Titles are completely gone. (Can't seem to select more than one index at a time.)
6. Close Adobe Reader.
