Start menu issue

This is more of an annoyance than anything else. Straight to business then!

Windows 7 64 bit.

Latest CCleaner ( Previous version had same issue )

Right so I'd open up CCleaner with the following items ticked.

Internet explorer

Everything

Windows Explorer

Everything except the following:

Taskbar jump lists.

System

Everything except the following:

DNS Cache

FTP Accounts

Start menu shortcuts

Desktop shortcuts

Advanced

Old prefetch data

Menu order cache

User Assist history

IIS log files

Right so then I analyze/run ccleaner. It goes smoothly.

I figure everything went fine.

Except for one thing, my start menu is now empty ( Not when you go to All programs, just the list of programs that were used most recently, whatever you call that list. )

And opening up programs from the start menu does not fill that list unless I restart my computer.

That's not really the problem though. It's the emptying of my start menu that irritates me. The first time I used the program with those items checked I figured, oh, I must have selected something I did not want selected. I ignored it for the next 3 or 4 times I used the program in the following months.

But today I decided to see if the latest patch fixed it. So I took note of the items I checked, and started checking them off one by one to see if I could determine which of the items was causing my start menu to empty out. But after checking all the items I had chosen originally and running CCleaner, the start menu didn't empty. I thought to myself, well, that's odd.

So I tried the next sensible thing. I closed CCleaner, opened it back up, checked to see if all my chosen items were ticked, and they were, and I ran CCleaner straight away, and when it was done.. what do ya know, start menu was empty again.

I'm guessing this must just be a glitch then? Somehow something is ticked in the background when I run CCleaner, but doesn't show me?

And the only thing I've tried to get around it is untick everything and retick everything I want to be ticked. Only then does it work properly without making my start menu empty.

Sooooooooo... any insight? Sorry for wall of text.

tl;dr CCleaner empties out my start menu when it shouldn't, to the best of my knowledge.

Hi, and welcome to Piriform.

Try unchecking "User Assist History" in the "Windows\Advanced" section.

User Assist History:

The start menu on Windows XP displays a list of the most recently run programs. Selecting this option will clear this list

Taken from the old "CCleaner Beginners Guide", and although the guide was based upon XP, it may still do the trick for Win7. I'm not sure.

Hey thanks for replying. I'm not at my home PC at the moment so I'll try that later when I get back.

But it's just a bit strange because when I manually did all of the above selected choices, I included user assist history thing, and it was fine. Only when I start CCleaner and run it straight away would my start menu be emptied.

So yer I dunno. I'll try open CCleaner and untick the one you suggested, and run it and see if that makes any differences.

I'll get back to this thread in about.. 8 hours. :D
