SSD and Defraggler

Hello

I have an Intel SSD (480 GB). Is it safe to run Defraggler on that drive? I also have a 2nd HDD drive that I ran Defraggler on without a problem.

Thank you

it's not unsafe per say.

suffice to repeat, SSD's;

  • don't need defragging
  • only need trimming
  • get absolutely no performance benefit
  • reduces read/write cycles of each memory cell

in short, yes you can, but why would you? :)

What about the TRIM feature? Is that ok. Does running Defraggler help or hurt to run it on a SSD?

as per my bullet point 2 - TRIM is fine.

regarding your last question, help or hurt?, for me the answer is - it will hurt and not help.

Doesn't Defraggler recognise the device as an SSD and run an Optimise instead of a defrag? In which case running Degraggler every few months or so wouldn't hurt.

Still don't have a definitive answer. Is there anyone from Piriform that can answer this question? Most computers have at least one SSD drive.

Thank you

maybe a bit of Google research on the topic of defragging SSD's will help you decide.

here is the official Piriform documentation on the subject; http://www.piriform.com/docs/defraggler/technical-information/defraggler-and-ssds

in short, TRIM on SSD is fine, and in fact, all they need.

Defragging a SSD should be avoided - but as said - will actually work but will physically be pointless and in the long run, be harmful.

Using Defraggler, as long as it issues a TRIM command and not do a physical defrag, as implied in their documentation will therefore also be fine.
