Hello all you trouble shooters out there. I have a wee problem. A buddies computer doesnt play sound. Nadda. I have his comp at my place including speakers. How do i check what drivers are needed for the speakers, and/or what else could be needed/wrong to get the sound back for him? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
You can find the device drivers on the PC manufacturer website.
First I'd make sure everything is plugged in correctly then check the Windows sound settings (Start -> Run -> sndvol32.exe) to make sure the volumes are set at an audible level and to make sure nothing is disabled, i.e.; the Mute box isn't ticked.
I would get the sound device name from Device Manager and do a search as Andavari says in the manufactures web site or Driver Guide.
How do i find the manufacturer? how do i access device manager? and the sndvol32.exe is missing (his comp is a total mess) but i downloaded it and will instal it.

You get into Device Manager by right clicking the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties - or get to it the slow way through the Control Panel.

That may explain some things!
...and perhaps if things don't work out a repair installation of Windows is in need, or a format and reinstall.
hmmmm. wont let me install it. and a complete reformat and such would suck. any other suggestions?

So you're sorted then. You know the manufacturer and the board type so you've downloaded the correct drivers?
