That lets you use externally installed download managers. There's also an internal one as an extension called DownThemAll which works pretty good.

Like you I just use Firefox's own built in download manager, however if I were on dial-up I'd definitely use a download manager with resume capabilities.

I use DownThemAll for most downloads.
