Thats is the default installer thats worked pretty good for a long time. When I install I remove everything except the desktop icon thats all I need.
If the user can't remove ticks out of checkboxes then I wouldn't bother installing, would you?

Get the Slim build, or Portable version.

The slim version helps if I dont want to install the toolbar, but what if I dont want to install desktop and start menu shortcuts or check for updates?

I don't know about the desktop shortcut. But I work on computers and want certain options set so to make things easier I just use the slim installer and exported the options from the registry. You can just make this ccleaner.reg:
