Well there is a long story of how I screwed my hard drive... but what I want to know now is how to get a specific file type of my computer, i need to get a .mx5 file (project file from mixcraft 5) but I dont know what to put in for the search string option... any advice?
Hi geeksquadunit007, and welcome to Piriform.
Select your drive and stick .mx5 in the search box.
You could try the "Wizard" (Options\Run Wizard), but that only really gives you general file types and not file extensions.
Make sure you include the "." (dot) in front of mx5.
You could also select "Tree View" in the "Options\General" tab, which will display results in their original folder structure, and select "Restore Folder Structure" in the "Options\Actions" tab, which will restore any files you select to their original folder structure.
Of course restore to a different drive or partition.
EDIT:
How you screwed your drive could make a difference. If the files weren't actually deleted, then also select "Scan for non-deleted files" in "Options\Actions".
And we don't mind long stories if there could be a fix for your drive at the end.
As a reminder, with the latest issue of Recuva you have to put a wild-card asterisk in front of the extension type, so the filename/path box should contain *.mx5
If .mx5 is followed by anything else then you will need two wild asterisks, to wit *.mx5*
Excuse lack of full stops, which would confuse the matter.
Hmmm.
Apologies for that, I'm a version behind, and mine works with just the dot extension.
Good spot Augeas.
Thanks I tried the first way without the asterik but it didn't show any files found. I will try this way. Thanks for the help =)
So I tried it that second way, but it didnt show any results, I did however show that there were files found when the progress bar was up, but then when it finished there werent any files... Is my drive just too far gone? or am I doing something wrong.
I would suggest scanning the drive without any filters, and if you set the options as mentioned above ...
You could also select "Tree View" in the "Options\General" tab, which will display results in their original folder structure, and select "Restore Folder Structure" in the "Options\Actions" tab, which will restore any files you select to their original folder structure.
... then you will be able to navigate the "tree view" to the same location in which the files you want were originally stored.
Always assuming that you know where they were stored, and you can then recover them into a copy of the original folder structure.
Is my drive just too far gone?
What happened to your drive? Is it your System Drive, and has it crashed, won't boot, blue or black screen, error messages etc.
If your drive is physically spinning OK, and hasn't been formatted or wiped in any way, have you tried booting your computer with a rescue cd and accessing your files that way?
