Restoring Start Up Options

Apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong area.

I have been having a problem with my Windows 8 PC, basically yesterday it decided that a file related to my graphics card no longer worked. This is a tablet so I don't use high end graphics on it and noticed that the file was listed under the start up options in CCleaner. I chose to disable it and now my tablet will not function correctly.

Everything is fine until I log in, at which point the tablet becomes unresponsive as it repeatedly tries and fails to background load the desktop.

I need to know how to restore my start up settings without being able to access CCleaner via the desktop/metro interface.

Safe mode will not work, but I can access the command prompt and boot programs from there. This may work if someone can tell me how.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

what sort of tablet, Surface Pro?, RT?

what do you mean "Safe Mode will not work"? - do you get an error message?

if you can get into the command prompt, can you type 'taskmgr' (no quotes) and go to the Start-up tab, select what you previously disable and re-enable it?

Hi mta, thanks for getting back to me.

It's an ASUS me400c tablet. Full Windows 8.

Safe Mode has the same issue and booting normally: it tries to load the desktop repeatedly and fails every time. It's unresponsive during this process.

I have the tablet with me but sadly forgot to bring a USB-to-Micro USB converter, so can't use my keyboard. I'll have to wait til I get home this evening to try your command prompt suggestion.

Thanks again mta. I hope this works!

Sadly this has not worked. Every time I try to load the Task Manager all it shows is the "Windows Command Processor" and no tabs. I even tried accessing it by typing in "msconfig" and scrolling through the tabs but this just crashing the 'system utility' every time.

Do you have any other ideas? I'm starting to get a little desperate!

can you get into the options for going back to previous restore points?

but if the Safe Mode running of programs is itself suffering then you are in trouble - Safe Mode is Microsoft's 'last hope' of getting into your system to fix errors.

what do you have in the way of backups?

If the full name of this tablet is an "Asus VivoTab ME400C", then it appears to have a "Recovery Partition". This enables one to restore the Operating System, and depending upon the options it has, either by keeping personal data or destroying it.

I'm wondering if there's an option to access the "Recovery Partition" immediately after the tablet fires up?

If not, maybe a USB recovery utility could access it? It probably had an option to create it's own USB recovery flash drive. If it did it may be possible to download from the manufacturer, a dedicated recovery ISO to install onto a flash drive?

Thinking out loud at the moment.

EDIT: Just found this ...
