Registry "Invalid Default Icon" for VLCvlc.exe

What is going on here?

CCleaner is picking up these registry errors (Windows 10, up-to-date CCleaner)

  • VLC is 32bit Weatherwax 2.2.4 from 1/6/2016

Invalid Default Icon C:\Program Files\\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Office.OneNote_17.8067.57781.0_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe\images\OneNoteLogo_150x150.png

HKCR\AppXaf0097ws4bwb0wre67gmp7pc9fjr8en6\DefaultIcon

Invalid Default Icon C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLCvlc.exe,0 HKCR\VLC.3g2\DefaultIcon

Invalid Default Icon C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLCvlc.exe,0 HKCR\VLC.3ga\DefaultIcon

…and many more

I have no idea what oneNote has to do with this.

OneNoteLogo_150x150.png is not there (checked unhidden)

That HKCR has data “Microsoft OneNote Document”

“\VLCvlc.exe” looks wrong -

  • maybe refers to “C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe” (with the s\ash vlc.exe)

  • is not in the registry (would be VLC.vlc with the dot)

I think (but I’m not certain) that I’ve already “fixed” (deleted) these issues once, and they are back.

Is this a VLC problem, a MS (OneNote) problem, or a CCleaner problem?

I often see the onenote invalid icon notification when running the reg. cleaner with Windows 10.

Delete it and it comes back again (after the next update?); so I think that it is a MS thing.

(There is probably something in the updates registering the location where it is expected to be, even though it's not physically there).

I'm not sure about the vlc, it could be the pathname as you say, have you tried rebuilding the icon cache?
