Both options are greyed out on whatever PC I install on, runing program as normal, or with elevated privilages.
If the boxes are there, why can't they be ticked or unticked?

Are either of you running portable recuva? What OS version from both off you. Are you running recuva with full administrative privileges?
i use in this case w8.1 64 bit - yes, with admin rights.
i just found that the portable version 1.52 has no menu tab like "advanced -> Context Menu"...
the installed version 1.52 is from first install from older version, perhaps 1.48 or 1,49 and then the new version just installed above.
in xp sp3 these context menu points also disabled... with recuva 1.51
