Recuva from failed SATA diskdrive

I have connected a failed SATA drive and Windows Explorer (W7) shows its presence but cannot read it. Recuva comes up with a window headed "Location not available" and says "Q:\ is not accessible Access is denied"

Any suggestions on how to recover any data from this disk please?

Have you tried booting the PC from a LiveCD with the failed drive also attached and seeing if it can be seen that way?
