Recuva doesn't recognize my cd/dvd drive

I'm new to Recuva and I tried to scan a cd a little while ago. The Wizard shows D: but if I select it the "OK" button grays out. If I enter D: in the box it doesn't do anything when I click OK. In advanced mode it doesn't even show D:. It's an old disc that's been reformatted. I've tried using different settings in the "Actions" tab but it doesn't seem to matter. Does anyone have an idea what's going on?

Edit to add: I've got a Toshiba laptop with Vista 32 bit. Everything else seems to working okay.

You cannot recover files from a CD/DVD drive it's not the same as recovering files from a hard drive.

What kind of disc is this i.e. CD-RW / DVD-|+RW??

Did you use quick format or full format??

Was it a multisession disc??

Thanks redhawk. It a CD-RW, multisession, but I don't remember if I used quick or full format.

If it's multisession then you maybe able to recover files using ISOBuster.

If that doesn't work I'm afraid there's not much as you can do.

(p.s. although ISOBuster is shareware it can run in "free" mode for non-DVD recovery)

You could have a try with "PhotoRec", the partner in arms of "TestDisk". (freeware)

Recovery of a fast blanked CD-RW: (Section 3)

PhotoRec Documentation:

As Richard suggests, it depends on the status of the disk and data.

Hope that helps.

I don't need to recover any critical data from the CD, I was mainly curious why Recuva wouldn't even see it. Now I know.

I use thumb drives now insted of CDs so it shouldn't be an issue going forward. Thanks for the help guys. :)
