Recovering files that I may have accidentally overwritten!?

A couple of months ago i plugged in an external hard drive to view the files - one particular file was a video file from many years ago of my friends and I.. fast forward several months and I told said friend about the video and she said she wanted to see it - so i went back and plugged in the hard drive again only to find out the file was corrupted. My only thought as to what went wrong was that I recovered it or something somehow before and accidentally overwrote it or something to that extent??? I literally have no idea.. but would love to know if there is any hope of recovering it at this point or if i might as well just wipe and reformat the entire drive and call it a loss? </3

Recuva is used for recovering accidently deleted files; or non-deleted files lost in a drive crash and/or reformat.

Recuva is not a file repair tool.

So if a file is corrupt rather than one that had been deleted then it’s unlikely to be recoverable by Recuva.

If you are very, very, lucky then there may be an eariler version of the file that had been deleted at some time and might still be recoverable - but that’s a long shot.

Another long shot - Try running chkdsk on the drive.

Then you could try again to see if the file will open, but I doubt it.
